I have been to Marmaris 6 times. The first time was in 1994 and the last time was in 2005. Since then I have heard numerous bad reviews about Marmaris. Particularly about the high prices, rip-offs and the fact that it is more like a sunny English resort than a Turkish one. I loved Marmaris when I visited and it is a shame that I have heard so many negative comments about it recently.
Do you think that these reports are unfounded or justified. If they are justified can anybody tell me of a resort in Turkey that is similar in size to Marmaris (I know Marmaris is large so don't mind maybe a bit smaller) that has retained at least some of it's Turkish character and isn't as expensive as Marmaris. I am thinking of going at the end of September this year.
Many Thanks

It appears to be as popular as ever to me.
What is to some a rip off is to others quite acceptable. I suppose it depends on whether you are of the opinion that all drinks and food in Turkey should be a total bargain compared to here or not.
I'm guessing that if Marmaris is expensive then so will the other large resorts be. It seems the more 'turkish' the resort the better value - but those will be smaller resorts and not places where you will be getting british food and fry ups but eating like the turks do.
I've read some people thinking that 5 lira for a beer is a rip off cos they want to only pay 2.5. I'm sure there is still a big variance in Marmaris from expensive at harbour front to cheaper up the side streets.

I certainly wouldnt say marmaris is ripping people off, probably just catching up with the times, I think its still cheaper there than any where else, even though there prices have gone up slightly!

My instinct is that a large resort like Marmaris is probably going to have some of the most competative prices around. I go to Olu Deniz and am going back in a few weeks time and have been told it is one of the more expensive resorts, although Hisoranu which is the town up the hill from Olu D is slightly cheaper, so maybe you could try there, but I am not sure if it hs the type of Turkish Character you mention, and it will be smaller than Marmaris.
I think S&C's point is valid in so far as what one person sees as a rip off another might see as the going rate for something. Prices are going up all over Europe at present and Turkey is no different from anywhere else in that respect.

Icmeler prices are far more expensive than Marmaris... There are places in Marmaris that are more expensive than others...shop around for best deals..and of course..HAGGLE!

Turkey is only expensive if you pay what they want you to pay, As Chelsea boy says Haggle, I personally think Icmeler is cheaper than Marmaris, Again it really depends where you drink and eat, We all have the same choice, On your walks throught the resort look at the boards outside the restauraunts where you will see the price that they charge if you dont see any ask the staff inside it whom will only be to willing to tell you, No other tourist resorts in Europe can compare with Turkish quality food at Fantastic prices also.

We have always gone to Olu Deniz and decided to try Marmaris. We did get ripped off by a barbers, offered a haircut and shave at one price then charged 4 times as much. No point in arguing as the barber had 3 of his mates standing at the doorway. It was actually very frightening. Also we were hassled loads at restuarants etc even when we had already eaten. Just find olu deniz and hisoronu so much nicer. People there went out of their way for you without expecting anything. Just my opinion.

having been to Turkey for the past 10 years prices certainly have gone up but are still good value in general. When you consider the pound is wek against the Euro this makes Turkey even better value
Marmaris is much cheaper than Icmeler, because there are so many palces to eat the competion is fierce and a typical chicken dish is around 15 lira, steak dish around 20 lira. Thats only about £6 - £8 and the quality is generally very high. Try eating in the UK for these prices with the same quality

I've never been to Turkey myself, but after shopping around for a late deal it seems that in terms of accomodation, it is extemely cheap. Going out this Friday and staying for a week, I've found a 3-star hotel in Marmaris for just £4.47 per person - that's not per night, thats for the whole week! Just 64p a night. And there are another 20 or so hotels in Marmaris where a week long stay is coming to under £20.
With these prices and the strength of the Euro, it really is no surprise that Turkey is an ever increasingly popular alternative.

                hi david
anywhere in turkey must be better value than the european countries, my brother rang me from ibiza a couple of days ago, a beer was 7 euros, and a bottle of beer 9 euros, thats extortionate.
my brother and his mates go every year on the annual boys trip, they of course go to san antonio in ibiza, apparently the west end was like a ghost town all the bars were empty, that for ibiza is bad news.
i think anywhere in turkey is a much better bet.
