Not to Marmaris anyway!
I have never been so disgusted with the way I was spoken to and slapped and pinched and thrown out a jewelers!!!!
I have always regarded marmaris as a nice place, and have been 6 times previously, but I certainly will not be going back.
On the other hand, Icmeler was a different story! Will definitely be visiting there more often as I never stumbled upon one rude person there.
I was very upset wth my holiday and ended up crying to go home after the first day. Apparently I was a ginger bitch (i am dark brown) I am a f**king cow (for not going into a shop) and The best bit was I was told to F Off in Turkish and thrown out of the jewellers as I couldnt decide what ring i liked within 5 minutes of being in the shop!
There is lots more too, but wont go on too much and spoil people expectations ofa lovely friendly holiday.
Lets just say though, that my friend whose first holiday abroad ever is refusing to leave Scottish soil again after all the rudeness we encountered.
The statements your making about Marmaris are pretty bad I may say, These things happen very very regularly in Markets in all Tourist area's in Turkey, Like all other working People Turkish people have a bad day at work also, We all do it also in one way or another.
oh please report these people when it happens. The Zabita is only too pleased to investigate trouble. It stops this kind of thing happening to others!

I disagree that this does not happen in ALL tourist areas in Turkey. It happens in some resorts MORE than others. I have been to Marmaris 3 times ( but not as a tourist ) and I live in Antalya and I can honestly say there is more pressure on tourists in Marmais than say Antalya. Granted I have only seen Marmaris in the months of Feb, March and May. never been there over the summer.
I agreee report the problem and then many people like this will smarten up their act.
And there are places in Turkey that have NO hassling...but most people would find these small places too quiet.
That is outrageous!!
You should have called the Police!
I most certainly do not agree with Rwb that perhaps they had a 'bad day', and that gave them the right to swear at you - and to slap you!! What sort of thinking is that??? What they did to you was assault - and they should be arrested for that, in my opinion.
I've been to Marmaris, and I've also visited markets in different resorts; but I have never been insulted or attacked!!
Rwb, which markets in Turkey does this behaviour happen 'very, very regularly'?
Strawberry
Oh dear that has made me worry that I have picked the right resort in Marmaris. I knew from HT that you have to expect a little more hassle but not what you experienced!
Have walked the length and breadth of Marmaris this week with the good lady and have had no hassle whatsoever.
But i agree please report it even now Ive not heard off any one getting abused like that
Yes a bit off hassle but not to the extent off your abuse.
Please get advise and report them so this does not happen again
Take Care and sorry to hear you had a bad experience
It attracts a lot of poorly educated workers who thing we have money to burn...but there is no need for these insults from people in shops... you should have shouted for teh Police when it happened, as the tourist police are there for a reason. don'tr let it put you off a beautiful country....
edited for bad typing...
Being poorly educated doesn't excuse violent behaviour!
We got literally pushed into a jewellers and when we didn't want to buy anything were told to F**** off and shoved back out the door!
I went into a shop in the bazzar looking for a key purse, they didnt have any and tried to sell me an ordinary purse, I said no thanks on my way out got hit with the purse and called a bi**h.
We also got insulted a few times in Turkish my hubby got called the C word by a man outside a restaurant.
Even the staff in the hotel took insult when we ate out! Thats only a few examples there were many more.
I have to say we love Marmaris but this holiday has made us wary of going back. Yes we can all have bad days and we understand that they have to make money, thats no excuse for being downright nasty and rude.
Marmaris is making a name for itself, as a place not to go! Such a shame!
If this was my first time in Marmaris, I would have put it down to it being a very unwelcoming place, and wouldnt go back, but as I have been so many times before without such trouble (yes i have had hassle, but not the rudeness and assaults - bartering, and encouraging you to buy things the way things used to be I could cope with, but this was just downright rudeness)
Ok, it wasnt EVERY person in Marmaris, and it certainly wasnt just one day of the holiday, it was the whole week, and I certainly will not go back after being treated the way I have.
I think it has something to do with the greed that so many resort workers have now become accustomed to that is the problem.
I am sorry to hear that others have experienced the same problem, but I am kinda glad it wasnt just us who experienced it. - Maybe it was beacuse we were 2 women, but I am sorry, that is no excuse for it what so ever.
There were many other incidents for us also, if I go into them I will be here all day!
It's not just you, I am hearing more and more people complaining about the way they have been treated in Marmaris, and I agree there is no excuse for it in any way.
Hope your next holiday is a better one, do let us know.
They say the hassling has stopped but i think its brought out some very nasty people in its place who are desperate for custom while the tourists are there, does put you off but we still love marmaris and the friendliness of others out weighs the nasty ones
me and the wife with the three little ones were subjected to abuse from a man because we wouldnt eat in his restaraunt which was bad and if it happened in england the bloke would of been flattened.
I`ve not had anything as bad as this happen to me, thank god. The only thing was a shoe shop owner, opposite the old Ali Baba jewellers on the main Marmaris road;
me and my SIL were alone for the day and had a wander around the shops, we went in to look for a pair of shoes, the owner said "for you, special price only £65" He came straight in with a ridiculous price and i knew he didn`t intend to barter much I didn`t grace him with a reply just turned to walk out, i could get 3 pairs for that at home. So he got in between me and SIL as we tried to walk away and blocked me in the doorway and wouldn`t budge for me to get out, i tried a few times to gently nudge him but he would`nt shift.... until i done it really hard that moved him. While it wasn`t threatening nor insulting to me i still will never go back in his shop again.
it certainly wasn't everyone one & we weren't put off,but we did encounter it & when we did want to buy something, the rude ones, certainly didn't get our custom.
tracy
Right, I'm ready for them next week! Let one of them step on my toes and they have had it!
Strawberry7, Icmeler, Marmaris, Turgetries, Dont take my word for it, Next time your in one of these Markets stand around and take a look for yourself at the Antics of some of these Market traders, You will find exactly the same as I do It happens all the time.
It's not fair that ....
1..you smile and walk away
2.. you take the insults without reply
3.. you let them get away with physical abuse.
The reason it's not fair is because they think they can do it to others.
