Take a charter flight to either Corfu or Skiathos. Take the real greek ferry to the mainland. Use a real greek intercity bus to get to Kastraki which is the nearest place with rooms/hotels near to the Meteora area, which is rather too large an area for a day trip anyway. The greek buses are pretty efficient in my experience.

If you really want a day trip your best bet would be probably be Corfu or Parga on the mainland.

The Pelion region is possibly the closest and trips are run from all resorts to Meteora. Pelion has very good beach resorts, is unspoilt and very traditional Greek.

going to TOLON next year and am hoping to visit aswell. Tolon is in the peloponnese which is 2.5hrs from Athens and Kalamata and not far from Meteora, Mycenaeng), Nafplio(Venetian former capital of greece) The Epidaurous (mm spelling again) and lots of other great sites, along with a very nice long beach. try www.tolo-guide.gr I also believe Stoupa to be very nice which is nearer Kalamata.

Best of Luck

I agree with you on most points but Meteora not far from Tolon? What map are you looking at? Fom Pelion it is a nice day trip, from Parga a two day trip but from Tolon I wouldn't even consider.

Hi,
Any advice on going to Meteora from Skiathos.
Is it too much for one day or is it best to organise an overnight stop in the area?

Stay overnight if possible as there is so much to see and one rushed day just is not worth it. Its such a special place it will stay in your mind forever .I think you will be able to get a ferry to volos then a busthe rest of the way.One bit of advice make sure you go.....dave

Even from the mainland resorts of the Pelion this should be an overnight stay so dont even consider it as a one day from Skiathos! You really need to get there by mid morning. This is an amazing place so it gets busy, get there before the crowds and its a lot more enjoyable

We drove there from about half way along the Pelion - and it took 3 and a half hours from there, it was do-able as the roads from that side were straight, flat and quiet but I wouldn't have liked to have driven any further. Do go if you can though, it really is the most amazing place I've seen.

Thanks. I was thinking of staying overnight, but had to check.

would you have to boko in advance to stay overnight? :D

I suppose it depends on what time of year you go. There ia a town nearby with accomodation and tourist facilities, I think this site has some accomodation links:

We did the trip in one day in 2000. With Thomsons, flying dolphin to Volos and a coach to Meteora and back. We left my wife lazing on the beach, and my son and I had a fabulous day out, arriving back in Skiathos town, close to our hotel, about 6.30pm. I personally think an overnight stay would be a waste of a day, as Kalamaki is tiny.

Sounds a little like hard work to me

Hi Valtosmythos. What do you do on holiday? Beach, bar, bed! I like relaxing but I do find 2 weeks just sat around sunbathing quite boring. It's nice to see a bit of history and nice scenery, don't you think?

Hi Rossterry2
I assume you mean Kalambaca, the town close to Meteora. Its a real buzzing place with loads of clubs and tavernas it has a great atmosphere at night and with the Meteora rocks illuminated its magic. A night here is definately not a wasted evening!

Hi Pargaluvva.
Yes, that is why I would not only go to Meteora for one day.I would think we would need a couple of days because of the travelling involved. Also going to Athens for a few days.

I am going to Sivota on sunday and have booked a trip wed/thurs to Meteora. Not sure how long it will take but can report back when I have been if u like.

We visited Meteora from the Pelion and it was a 3 and a half hour drive - long but flat and relatively straight forward from that side. They also did trips there from Parga but it is over the mountains and maybe an overnight trip. I think if I went back it would be good to stay overnight to see it early morning or at sunset when the crowds have gone.
