Before you come over to Bulgaria, go into Boots and purchase something called a mosquito zapper (costs approx 6 pounds). If you get bitten press the zapper onto the spot its like a small electric shock, by the day after it should be going down, instead of it hanging around like a big boil for weeks.

hi was in sunny beach last july/august and we were eaten alive been told to buy mozzie plugs for the bedroom and wear insect repellant so have already bought a supply for this year as we are going back at the same time

its the big brown things that fall out of the trees you got to watch out for

they like flying motor bikes

dont think they bite but if you have a fear of bugs they will frighten the life out of you

i got biy a few times by mozzies but it was in the lift where it was real hot

do any of you know what the locals use for the mozzies this is quite often the best and cheapest thing to use

I've been told by locals to rub rakia on exposed areas to prevent them biting, to apply rakia after they have bitten to stop the itching and to take internally sufficient that you dont give a damn.

Hi Patka

I have been bitten in S.B. two years ago to the stage of them turning infected but its where do you stop taking medication or any sort of drugs or remedies if you are prone to them they will get you.
I am going to try garlic this year have tried yeast and also take antihistimines for at least 2-4 weeks before I go out on holiday they still love me my husband never gets bitten. I do think you have a good reply but the next morning they will be sore.

getting bit by mozzies is something to do with the natural odours you give off

thats why some get bit and some dont

i have very bad alergic reactions to any insect bite and hate been bitten

my bites swell up like golf balls then split, bleed and ooze puss (apologies if your eating)

i have tried all sorts of remidies, but the best thing yet is the electronic zapper, it doesnt stop the reaction on me but it stops the itching in the early stages then its down to patience and what ever i get off the doctor

Hi, I always have two slices of bread with marmite on at breakfast, never been bothered, it is alleged that an aroma is passed through your body that the mozzies do not like. Tonyt

While in Bulgaria last August people all around us were really badly bitten.
Myself and my family weren't bittten at all, we used Skin so Soft dry oil spray from avon (the pale blue one, apparently marines use this ) as an aftersun and then sprayed tesco own brand mossie spray . It contains 100% Deet which they hate.Spray it outside though as it would choke you to death and don't miss any bits.

Mossies usually love me, so something must have worked.

There have certainly been mosquitoes in Evksinograd/Sveti Konstantin every year when I've been there but not in large quantities.

As GS is just 'up the road' I suspect that you'll find at least some there.

Hi,
I've been told to take 1-2 vitamin B1 tablets daily for a week before going on holiday and keep taking whilst on holidy, the brand name for them is Benevra, think they give off an odour, similar to Tonyt's idea but not as tasty :)
I also buy the aftersun with insect repellant in (shouldn't say this about a rival chemist but I've found Boots about the best)
citronella oil is also supposed to be very good
Roll on July :!: :!:

Hi Paul,

Yes they are here now i'm afraid, not in the day at the moment just night time. At the moment we are having a lot of rain and damp weather and this does bring them out.
