You can get them in SB, but if you use a citrus smelling body wash (Imperial Leather do one called citrus burst) they should keep away from you. I have used it in the past & it wasnt till we ran out that we started to get bitten.
There are a few ideas previously on this post that would work just as well.

I'm off to Golden Sands next week, wil I need to take any plugs to ward off any mosquitos,or use body insect repellant?

Just to say that on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday nights last week, it went mozzie mad in Sunny Beach - no problems before that. On the Thursday it was like a mass german dancing competition with people all along the front and in the restaurants slapping themselves, their partners and clapping the air. It was pretty bad and some people were covered in bites, so go prepared. Hopefully they might have died off by now.

I agree Whistler-Allen we were in SB as well and it was very very bad. On Thursday we went out at 4pm to get tattos done and by the time dusk came I was eaten alive  . I didn't put on any mozzie stuff because as it was 4pm and I had been ok up till then I didn't give it a thought - what a mistake

In all my travels I have never experienced it as bad as that anywhere. People were whacking themselves and the area around them it was mad :bhead

When we got back to our room my husband went on the balcony and you guessed it we had them in the room also. We sprayed the room and the light around the balcony - there were loads. The next morning the balcony floor was covered in dead mozzies.

Be warned take plenty of sprays with you.

No worries, Carrie. I think it might have been that maybe it had reached the exact temprature and humidity for any eggs that had been laid for them all to hatch out, like when we get swrms of flying ants or greenfly. Watching everyone would have been quite funny if it just wasn't so annoying and unpleasant.

Maybe i'm over cautious but we always take either Boots or Malibu aftersun with insect repellant with us and apply after shower in evening before going out. We've used several other aftersuns with insect repellant in but have found these the best as we haven't been bitten on recent hols.
Also a product with vitamin B1 in it (available from health food stores) is very good, you take it a week before you go and while you are there.
Somebody also told me to cut a lemon in half and place it away from where you are sitting and the mossies go for that :!: :!: not tried tht one yet.Best advice is just be prepared,if not i'm sure they will sell products out there to get rid of mossies.
Some places I've been to actually spray the resort
Good luck

Hi - I thought mozzies were adverse to citrus eg citronella, cologne etc. Maybe having the lemon makes them stay away altogther rather than attracting them instead of you? I'm probably being a pedant!

we were there 7th to 21st July nothing our first week, but as said previously they came out in force for a couple of days, then calmed down a little, although there were still some around. I used Jungle spray but the one called tropical which is recommended for the carribean, and only ended up with one bite. This spray has deet in it, it stinks but does the job. Make sure you buy the Jungle Tropical which is a green can with a Red band around, as they do a normal one as well, which is slightly cheaper.

Sorry to hijack this topic, but what is Albena like for wasps. They love me, I hate them!! I tend to react not too well when stung and it makes being outside a misery when they are around as I try and avoid them. We even did a controlled experiment when having a BBQ- while I was inside, no wasps, I came out and there they were. It happened several times- bizarre!!

Hi Pam,

Can't say that I've really noticed any wasps, either in Albena or the surrounding area over the years (having said that, they may be aware of your holiday plans this year :P ).
