The mud baths are good for a laugh but a totally discusting, communal, degrading experience(worth a visit though).
Be warned not to get anything in your mouth or ears as we all ended up with bad stomachs for the next 5 days after our visit. The only one who didn't kept their clothes on. Have fun !!

                Hi all,
Are the mud baths cooked up for the delight of tourists or are they a part of traditional Turkish life?
PS. Does the mud sting ?

I don't know about the mud baths, but the Turkish baths are used by locals a bit like our swimming pools are used here, although there are more touristy ones too.
I have been to mud baths in Romania and the mud didn't sting, but it did stink!

Hi, we went to the mud baths at Dalyan whilst on the Turtle Beach boat trip, the admission charge was covered in the trip, it was really good, cover yourself in warm grey mud, bake in the sun, shower off, hosed down, now for the smelly bit - the hot sulphur pool (small, but you can swim in it) everyone enjoyed it, can't wait to see tho photo's ,should be sort of "the thing from the black lagoon" type of picture I expect!!
Well worth a try (and it doesn't hurt, mind you, I'm still finding bits of grey mud here and there!!!!!!!!!!!)
cheers,
paulo

Can't say I saw any locals using the mud baths when I went last time but certainly there were alot of Turkish tourists. Over the years it has like everything become more commercialised.
I can remember going there about 25 years ago - maybe even more - and there was literally the mud baths and one tap to wash under - far cry from how it is today.
Still enjoyed it though

Many thanks for the info all.
The thought of the Sulphur (rotten eggs?) smell puts be off a bit but I'll try the Hamam.......sounds great.
Cheers,
Steve

                Hi
We went to the mud baths in Dalyan just 2 weeks ago. We went there as part of a Trip.
Was a great experiance very differant to anything else i have ever done i must admit. The smell did put us off a bit but after a good 5 min you just get use to it.
You jus lie in the mud cover yourself all over then come out and stand to dry for approx 10 min then shower yourself off.
Really enjoyed would recomend anyone trying it.

We went to Dalyan on Monday - interesting but not for our 2 kids!! My 14 year old daughter hated getting dirty and my 5 year old son didn't like the smell! (It was VERY smelly). Also, a word of warning, it gets very slippy there with mud and water everywhere so be extremely careful.

We have been everytime on the Dalyan transfer trip but probally wont this year as our one year old would eat all the mud. I love it it is the perfect end to a great holiday, yeah the sulpher is smelly but hey proves the Turkish gold is good and brings it up nice and shiny.

If you go to the mud baths, pick up a bottle of lemon cologne thats available ereywhere, and when you have finished douse yourself in it!

can any one say when the best time to have a mud bath is. i usually have a turkish bath day after we arrive ,, ready in time for tan ,, but will a mud bath take away the tan i got .. or can they be taking anytime ????

Hi - I know many people who have taken a mud bath at various stages during their hols. There tans have still been there after and they have said they feel good for the bath. So I dont think you will loose your tan. You could always leave the mud on and go for the grey look !!

I know you won't believe me on this but here goes anyway; the tan is a pigment in your skin, so can not wash of, and before some wag adds "it's a pigment of your imagination"

a turkish bath removes the dead skin that would have tanned ,, but what about a mud bath with the sulphur ? does that have same effect,?

It is rumoured that these mud baths remove yourtan, but i have had many and my tan has never been affected. Itis a great experience, with an very overpowering smell!!

We had a mud bath last year, your skin feels absolutely wonderful, and no it didn't make a blind bit of difference to our tans
we went on the boat trip from the jetty, full day job with a trip to turtle beach, absolutely first class
the sea was a little choppy on the way back though
but it hasn't put us off, will be there this year

mentioned it somewhere else on here, if you do go to the mud baths it's a good idea to take some of the cheap lemon cologne with you to kill the smell

I have it on good authority from some friends in Dalyan.... that the natural clay has long since been eroded... they are shipping in stuff from elsewhere.... including building sites.
I would rahter visit the thermal springs with th ehot water, further up lake Gumusluk!
