I used to be a regular visitor to the Oktoberfest, visiting every year between the mid 80's to the mid 90's.
I used to go on coach trips organised by some of the larger companies (Cosmos, Intasun.those were the days!) but no one seems to do this sort of trip now.
I started using other city break companies and soon found that the best way to beat the sky high premiums charged during Oktoberfest was to book your arrival 2 or 3 days before Oktoberfest started.
I am thinking of returning this year but the prices are scary!! I know city breaks aren't cheap, especially during trade fairs, but can anyone point me in a direction where i can get a reasonably priced hotel in Munich during this time?
The prices i have seen could give me two weeks in an hotel in Greece for what i am quoted for three or four nights in Munich!!
Thanks,
John
Right, will you be on your own or is there a group? How late do you want to stay out night? Do you specifically want the city or is it OK to travel a bit as long as it's a cheap and simple journey??
And where are you starting from? This could be the killer, there aren't many cheap flight options to Munich except from the London area and there's no point finding a reasonably priced place to stay if it's going to cost £300 to get there.
We plan to fly out on or around 17th September and i can get a return flight from Edinburgh on 17th for £149!
We would prefer to stay in the city, one of our favourite hotels was the Herzog Wilhelm, not far from the Sendlinger Tor. It used to be quite a decent "bucket price" hotel but it looks like it has really gone upmarket since my last stay!
We aren't total party animals and are usually crashed out by about 1am (although don't hold us to that!)
We love Munich and just go with the flow......................i have on occasion ended up sleeping in parks!
That was when we stayed in Austria and were bussed up to Munich for the festival and i missed the return coach. Well, we are here to party!

In the time I've got tonight the best I can come up with is the town of Tutzing which seems more reasonable and has a fair selection of places, some of which are showing available around your dates. Tutzing is the southern end of the line on the S6 trains which will be running until after midnight that weekend, takes about 45 minutes. A day pass covering the whole of Greater Munich is €18 for a group of 5 and is valid until 06:00 next day so would get you in and out of the city cheaply (the area also includes the airport for getting from and to)
The lists are at http://www.tutzing.de/tour2.asp but the next problem is that most of the links are only in German. Ferienhaus/wohnung are appartmenst and holiday homes, Pensions are the smaller hotels, Privat is B&B in houses and they may not like the idea of you turning up at 01:00 !!
The link is interesting and i have managed to decipher bits of it with my little knowledge of German!
If i can't get them talked around, we may go for a break in Greece ......or maybe try the Belgian beer festival in Diksmude. (not a patch on Oktoberfest i know)
If we do that, we'll make plans to go for Oktoberfest next year straight after this years is over!
Thanks again for your help!

In the meantime, a good alternative is any time in Bamberg - that place is one continuous beer festival without the hype. Although St Georges Day would be a good time, beer tastings at 10 different breweries!!
Their somewhat slow tourist site is at http://www.bamberg.info in German, if you can manage it there is a rather obvious link in the middle of the page. There is a less detailed version in English at http://bamberg.travel/www_tks/bamberg_eng_home_268_89_7_f.htm click Culture and then the bottom option.
