We went to Sorrento last October. We booked flights using http://www.skyscanner.net/ There is a bus direct from Naples airport to Sorrento. Also a train but the station is a bus ride from the airport
There is not really a lot for children, no beaches as such, but it is a very beautiful place. We stayed at Camp Nubedargento in what they call a bungalow. It was ok but very basic, no kettle just a huge pot to boil water. There are many interesting places to visit and the train is very good and cheap. Pompeii is amazing but probably boring from a child's perspective. My advice would be to do a thorough search on the internet before deciding.

thanks colali - it sounds like lovely place for an extra break - will check out the prices - Our children are now a lot older fortunately and love their roman history the eldest and Dad in particular so we would love to go but it makes it difficult and costly when there are five of us i.e two rooms . we could always go alone (i have a great mother in law) but I feel the children would really appreciate Italy now they are older. and it would be a shame to leave them at home.

Visited Sorrento a few years back and would love to return. Loads to do if interested in history, Pompeii is a must but also visit the less well known site of Herculaneum. Small beach, boat trips and plenty of restaurants.

we stayed in Sorrento a few years ago - great place with lovely bars & resturants. Try and eat out i.e. don't take a half board option.

Sorrento is also pretty close to Capri & Amalfi and you can take bus or boat trips to these places which is a great way to spend a day or two.

We went to Sorrento last Sept for a wedding, we had a great week.. staying a little out of Sorrento in St Agata at a beautiful villa ( Li Galli...under the villa description of Villa ruoppo ) the buses were dirt cheap & took about 20 mins (takes that to get across most big towns here!) and they ran regularly... it was great to have the day in Sorrento then retire to a villa in the middle ...(as in outside the windows in our garden) of a lemon grove..last bus home was about 11.30pm.. The villa cost us 950 euros for the week and the views were breathtaking.. I see that the prices are the same this year although they have added a pool..you can get everything you need in St Agata...the rep & company were excellent, you can chat to them online before going or talk on the phone, they are based in Scotland but are Italian with great english. The flights are sitting at about £270 each with Travelocity from Scotland but maybe cheaper for you. This was a holiday which was different class & we did'nt find it all that expensive to eat ect...if you go enjoy the meloncello....mmm nicer than the lemon..lol

They also do villas slightly closer to Sorrento on the same bus route.. in Massalebruense... which also looked gorgeous and will try the next time
There is also a very easy to find/use & cheap ferry service from Naples to Sorrento. My son is 8 and we went to the beach and he also loves Roman history, was'nt bored & watched cartoons occasionally...lol even tho he could'nt understand them he said it was OK cos he'd seen them all before & knew what was happening!
