If you haven't already got one then I suggest you open a Nationwide Building Society current account card. Not only can you draw money out from any cash machine worldwide, they don't charge you a penny to do so (as Nationwide absorb all of the fees). You will also get the best exchange rate around, and an even better one if you get your currency out of the cash machines abroad.
I have to say as well that my local branches customer service is second to none and I've even transferred my old current account from the bank to them as we were very impressed with them. You can but try...
I recently took out a hsbc current account just for holiday money but now I think I should change it to a Nationwide one!
The Nationwide one I use is a Flexi account.
And of course the real bonus is that it is free!!
Pleased to see them currently advertising this on TV - I think they'll get a lot of new business out of it.
We also have an esavings account with them - you can transfer money directly on line form and to your flexaccount. Again - so easy - that what I use to save for our hols, I transfer the money into our flex account to use while we are away and then transfer any surplus back into the esavings account when we come back.

Can only reitterate what has already been said. We moved from the HSBC to the Nationwide specifically for this facility. Used it in Vegas in April and got a really good exchange rate as well as no fees, definitely recommended.
Never realised everyone else was being charged
nationwide should have dvertised this more
Most of the time when i've got back home and checked my statements i've got a very good exchange rate too
My wife also has a current account with the A&L so we also get free annual worldwide travel insurance. this has saved us a small fortune over the years.
So which account is best?
Hi Lee, it's their current account, which is called a flexi account.
ok thanks Dawn,
Hi. I have also always been with Nationwide and have a Flexaccount. It is just like a normal Bank Account, were you can have your wages etc paid into. Another thing with it is they also pay interest on balances once a year just like a savings account. When we go on holiday we just take 100 euros to cover us for immediate use and then use our card in the cash machines for the rest of holiday which saves having to carry large amounts of cash with us or in a safe. It also has a visa sign on it as well which means it can be use in the restaurants and supermarkets that accept cards as well as I think about every bank. Karen
just in the process of opening an account with nationwide. as a first timer abroad was very apprehensive about carrying loads of money with me.and the charges lloyds/tsb are a bit steep.will let you know how i get on
I opened one on Monday, it was very easy and didn't take long whereas my curent account with HSBC took ages as they were trying to get me to have their credit cards/ house insurance/ life insurance/ etc, they even asked me my hobbies and favorite football team!!! (hsbc not Nationwide)
Just back from Halkidiki today , and the rate I was getting from the cash machine in Pefkohohori was 1.49 Euros to the pound (310 Euros cost £208). No fees etc either way
1.49? thats great!!!
chivas69 silly question here. will i need to open the account by putting some money into it.i,ve been with TSB for the last 20 years so not sure how it works these days.i am applying by post hence the question
no you can open it with a zero balance!
thanks chivas
I still can't understand why people go abroad without a Nationwide card , they should be made compulsory !!!
Robby
Hi, just thought I'd let you know, the Nationwide Visa Card also charges no fees when you travel abrouad, but they like you to let them know that you are going away to help reduce credit card fraud.
