Hi all
I am in my late forties and a young at heart lady, and am trying to decide whether to go to Benidorm or the Costa del Sol. I am planning a stress break, my husband is staying home to look after the family.
I know Benidorm is really busy not been to either areas before, would like to see what they are like to see if my husband would like them. What hotels to go for, don't want lots of kids running around the corridors all night, I'm no an old misery guts but want some peace at night! Have 3 children but are all grown up now. I want a hotel that is neither a long walk from the resort or beach, especially at night. but don't want to be smack bang in the noise. Any suggestions would be useful.
Have holidayed by myself on a few occasions so its not new for me.
Have done diy in the past, but it is a lot dearer than it was.
Thank you in advance
Dawnie-Rob
We have just returned from Benidorm staying at Hotel Royal. Its a lovely hotel, very clean & modern. We though it was in a really good location being near to the Old Town & only about 5 mins walk to the beach but also not that far to walk to all the British bars. There wasn't many children in the hotel, probably due to there being no kids club, playground etc. Also very quite at night as all the rooms were carpeted. We booked through Travel Republic but know Thomsons also go there.
I have visited Benidorm several times and I prefer the old town as its more Spainish. The Avenida hotel (I have stayed in the Avenida apartments twice) is close to the beach and close to the old town its a 4 star and won`t have many kids in as its mainly Spainish that visit here.
Whilst Benidorm is a large built up town it still retains it`s charm around the old town area. The beaches have white sand and it`s gently shelving into the sea. Lots of shops to look around and plenty to keep you busy.More competion on prices in Benidorm so food and drink cheaper.
Costa Del Sol I would recomend Benalmadena or close by, not as built up, still has a Spainish charm to it. Beaches nice but not as white or as shelving into the sea. Riveria hotel is on the sea front and no kids allowed. Benalmadena has a wonderfull marina. A fantastic park (Paloma Park) we spend hours in here. See Sanji`s videos.
I love both resorts and could not pick which I like the best but it depends what you want from your holiday. Lets us know what you are looking for and I am sure we can offer you more advice.
Sanji visits both resorts and loves both I am sure she will be along soon to help as well.
Two beautiful white sand beaches, a stunning pedestrianised seafront with lots of bars and a choice of the tourist bars with loads of entertainment or the old town charm with original spanish bars and restraunts.Get in cafe benidorm in the square for a real good night out right 8pm through to 8am!
I have looked at your post and I've given a lot of thought into what I would recommend....having been to both places.
If I was a travel advisor and you came into my shop and explained that you are a 40 year old woman who is travelling on her own and wanting a stress free/chill-out place etc, then I would recommend the Costa del Sol.
I would recommend Torremolinos, but Torremolinos is a big place with vast beaches and each district is different to the next one, therefore, I would specifically recommend the area between Torremolinos town centre and Benalmadena Marina.
The area is basically known as La Carihuela/Montemar and Carihuela is a Spanish fishing village, which is managing to hold onto its roots and charms.
There are 3 and 4 star front line hotels, a very long flat promenade, plenty of shops and bars, and a really laid back atmosphere, but should you want to boogie the night away, Benalmadena Marina is only a short stroll away and here you have the more loud and energetic type of entertainment, or Torremolinos town centre is about 30 mins away walking distance, or about 6 or 7 euros in a taxi.
From here, if you fancy exploring other places, there are numerous travel agencies offering very reasonable priced day trips to places like Ronda, Sevilla, Cordoba, Granada and Gibraltar and this is an excellent way (although a long day for some of the excursions) to get a glimpse of places that you may never get the opportunity to see again or might like to go and visit in the future.
If you fancy a day out locally, you can catch the train that runs from Fuengirola to Malaga, you can't go wrong because there is only one train that runs on this line and for a few euros visit places like Malaga City, which is vastly overlooked by most tourists staying on the Costa's, or from Fungirola catch the bus to Mijas and within 20/30 mins you will be in a white village in the mountains, and although it's become tourist trap, it's a lovely place to visit for a few euros.
The beach whilst not the same type of sand as Benidorm, is well kept and very clean and the sun-beds come with the coconut type parasols, they also have very thick and comfortable mattresses on them to spend a stress free holiday reading a book and listening to the waves"¦.. something that Benidorm doesn't have.
I know a woman from Belgium who is probably in her late 30's early 40's and has been going to the same hotel that I usually stay in La Carihuela for 13 years and always the same 3 weeks
She walks late at night on the promenade on her own amongst the Spanish families who frequent this resort and nobody thinks nothing about it"¦.well, maybe the males might fancy their chances.
But the type of clothes she wears (very short skirts and not much material in the tops) and the way she strolls up and down the promenade in her own little world, you could be forgiven for thinking she was a prostitute, and in all honesty, I think if she walked around Benidorm like that, late at night, she WOULD be looking like a prostitute.
I have never travelled on my own, but as a woman into today's Europe, your personal safety has to be considered, and whilst no place is safe, there are some places which seem to be safer than others, therefore between the two resorts, I honestly would recommend La Carihuela, I personally think you will feel more safe and feel more comfortable taking an after dinner stroll in the laid back, family orientated resort.....Laid back, not dead.
I love both of the Costa's and the only thing they have in common is that they are in Spain, Andalucia is different to Valencia, the customs, food and even the dialect are different.
What I love about Andalucia is walking on the promenade and smelling the sardinas as they are being charcoal grilled on the open fires on the beach, next to the chiringuitos (beach bars) and smelling the aroma as it whaffs through the hot evening air, and if you love sea food"¦....La Carihuela is THE place.
It is my opinion, but that's where I'd send you if you walked into my shop, after considering your requirements.
I know it seems like I have dissed down Benidorm, but I love Benidorm for other reasons, like walking in the Sierra Helada mountains and the diversity of the town.
Maybe if you spend some time looking at all the videos I have made in both the Costa Blanca video library and the Costa del Sol video library, this may help you decide.
Hope this has helped

Reading your review brought back memories of our wonderful times in the Costa Del Sol.
I too, would recommend Dawnie to visit there.
I would say La Carihuela as well. I actually think given Benidorm's huge popularity with groups of friends that even though Benidorm is bigger and busier than La Carihuela, you may actually feel more lonely in Benidorm. I think you are more likely to feel part of La Carihuela where you may feel a bit more out on a limb in Benidorm. Obviously I don't know you as a person and this may not be the case at all, I guess I am looking at it from my own perspective.
Id never heard of La Carihuela but have just googled it and it does look very pleasant and would probably suit a lady alone more unless she was a wilder type.
First of all I would like to thank you for your replies and suggestions. And yes to Christine, it was me who went to Magaluf , and I really enjoyed it. Even though I was by myself on a stress break I did feel safe. One night I got back to my hotel, and trotted back to the Sol Antillas at around 3am!! . Mind you, you can blame Adam and Steph Goodfellow, I was at their bar all night! Are they still there and on this website?
Funnily enough whilst I was in Magaluf a young girl came up to me encouraging me to go into a bar she was working, and she recognised my accent and she came from my neck of the woods, about 2 streets away!!!
Getting back to the subject I have heard different things about the two parts of Spain and just didn't know what to pick. I am fairly young at heart, like to wear nice clothes, not a fuddy duddy, and luckily enough can wear anything, but I wouldn't quite have the courage to wear a skirt up to my ear hole, sorry about that.
I do like disco music and like a dance. I was in La Pineda, near Salou last October, and it was very quiet. i didn't go to any clubs.
I like having a nice drink in music bars, where you can listen and dance to the music if you want to. I always make sure that if a man comes it, that I am a happily married lady and not interested.
Regarding the two different places, I like a resort that is not too quiet so there is plenty to see. Not perhaps one street and thats it. I also like to try places out for future reference for my husband and I to go to together. Perhaps Benidorm is ok if you are with someone else, and may look more into Costa Del Sol. I did like sound of the Marina at Benalmadena. I am been on lots of sites looking for bargains as I would like to this time go late September, but at the moment, prices are a bit steep, especially when they stick the old supplement on for a single person, in a single room, its annoying.
Thankyou everyone and I will look at your videos sanji.
Any more suggestions and help will be welcome
bye for now

Hi Dawnie ... if you feel that you have perhaps now ruled out Benidorm and the Costa Blanca, I can move this topic to the Costa del Sol forum for you in the hope of attracting further input ??
Thanks for the input, David perhaps you could move my post to Costa del Sol, now and may get more advice on the resorts and up to date info on hotels that have been visited this year. Thank you to all on the Costa Blanca forum, please don't hesitate to contact me on my pm for any advice you wish to give me.

You are now in the Costa del Sol forum Dawnie, but members in the Costa Blanca forum can still access the topic from there. Hopefully they will forgive you for the decision that you have made.
David
Am now looking into Costa del Sol, have heard good things about La Carihuela. I would like a hotel that is not a long walk out in the day or evening between the two resorts of Benalmadena and Torre*. I am used to walking, but would prefer to be a short walk. I have looked at one or two hotels. 3-4 star perhaps , am on a tight budget. Would consider diy as I done this in the past if it works out cheaper.
Also heard that there is a train that runs from Malaga airport, any details would be great. Save on the transport costs.
Dawnie-Rob
I would just like to ask the one question though - what dates does the Belgium girl holiday?
Robby
what dates does the Belgium girl holiday?
Oh, you are awful, but I like you First 3 weeks in June.
