Hi All
I am off to Egypt in 2 weeks and was wondering if any of you that have been before could answer some Questions for me please.
1- I know that it is common to get the holiday tummy bug while on holiday so should i buy something over here for it or is it better to get something when we there if we need it?
2- When we went to turkey last year we took anti histomines (sorry no idea how to spell it) to help with the itching caused from bites and it worked. will we get bit there or not really?
3- We have bought all our gear for snorkeling and well im worried about getting stung ect so again is there anything i need to do if i do.
4- Tipping - I have egyption money but not sure what is a good tip for the staff, I.e bar staff, cleaners ect, we are going all inclusive but we like to tip if we have good service or even a friendly smile.
sorry for all the questions its just that it is our honeymoon and im thinking that if i can be prepared then hopefully nothing will ruin it. So if you have any other advice that you think i might need to know please let me know.
Thanks
2. Anti-histamines, paracetamol, germoline (or similar), lanacane - all good to have just-in-case. This time of year there are not many biting insects about, we go in three weeks and the anti-mossie kit will stay at home.
3. Lanacane and anti-histamine, but you should be fine.
4. Remember hotel staff only earn £1-2 a day, so not too much.
The last time in March, however, I was bitten badly and required visits from the hotel doctor, antihistamine injections and tablets, steroid cream, a form of calamine lotion and a course of anti-biotics - and I had to keep my legs out of the sun! On return to the UK I had to visit my GP, follow up with the nurse and was given yet more anti-biotics! Unfortunately I am left with a substantial amount of scarring too.
Although some of the hotels in Egypt spray insecticide daily if you are prone to being bitten or react badly to them as I did last time I would DEFINATELY take precautions (there is a dedicated topic somewhere on this site about avoiding insect bites). I plan to take insect repellent wipes on the plane with me when I go back in July so I'm covered right away. But remember there are mosqitoes in the UK too. I have just put calamine lotion on the bites I got in my sleep a couple of nights ago!
All the best for your forthcoming wedding and enjoy your honeymoon, you have chosen an ideal destination.
I've been to Sharm twice, both times in July/August and both times sustained quite annoying bites so yes, take anti-histamines with you just in case
If you do get bitten there suggest asking in the pharmacy for "Fenistil gel" (orangey-yellow tube) which my daughter used extensively and to very good effect in April having been badly attacked by the wee beesties . Think it was about 70p and certainly as good as anthisan. Have actually imported some back to the UK - and if anyone is going over and would like to bring some more back for me I'd be grateful (kids camping in Scotland in August!!!!!!)
