Personally I have to say that we did investigate Sri Lanka for a holiday but decided against it due to attacks. Saying that we DID go to Bali last year and are planning to go there again. So, everyone does what they feel comfortable with.
If you do have to change your travel plans why not investigate Goa? You will certainly find your money goes far there!

I do feel sad when I hear about the troubles in Sri Lanka - it's such a beautiful place. Are you supposed to be staying in Galle or somewhere else? The FCO are only advising against travel to the north and east at present but I can see why you are worried about your holiday. There were a few demonstrations in Colombo when we were there in June 2005 but we personally had no problems - we even met some Tamils in the Kandy Botanical Gardens.

I am sure everything will be fine and as I said I am not worried about my safety.In todays troubles just going to London or anywhere has it risks.... Its just annoying because we paid the balence last week and instead of looking forward and counting down having this nagging doubt of "what if the travel advice changes" which could happen right up the day of travel we would be left with no holiday I know we would get a full refund but that would not compensate for a lack of an Xmas holiday in the sun.
Fiona ....Researched prices for Goa with Portland/thomson going on the same date 12th of dec is nearly the same price.. Phoned up Portland was willing to pay the Admin cost to change the holiday just for Peace of mind. But because I am within 8 weeks of the Holiday(YESTERDAY was 8 weeks ) Not allowed to change unless foreign advice changes.

Hopefully you won't need to change. But I am a glutton for punishment too.I am off the New Orleans next April- booked it before the hurricane season! So far, its still standing! And next summer we are looking at returning to Bali( or Mexico )
PS if you do have to change to Goa don't go AI! Not that there is anything wrong with it- just that there are too many great and cheap options outwith the hotel( but thats another forum!)

Corinne certainly knows a lot about SL! She gave me a lot of help when I was thinking about a holiday there.
