Any suggestions for an overnight stop en route from Suffolk to Liskeard area of Cornwall at the end of September. Probably looking at Berkshire or Wiltshire. We will probably try to avoid the M4 and use A roads instead. The travelodge near Newbury is available at a crazy £15 per room per night!! A b&b would be nice but we do not want to spend more than £50 for a double room.

Why?
There may a reason I don't know about
it's around 400 miles from Lowestoft to Liskeard should take around 8 hours
Personally I'd just do 1/2 hour stops to take a break a couple of times wouldn't even need to refuel
Just thought it might be nice to break the journey! We still may do the journey in one day as we are both drivers - just looking at the options.
I have stayed in some of the travelodges in the area you mention. Tiverton, Newbury Tothill and Amesbury- Stonehenge . I found a great pub when we stayed at Tothill in a little village close. That's what I would do. Stay anywhere you can book for 15/night. and look for a local village pub close to eat at. Travelodges are much of a muchness but they do what they say on the tin.
To get to the pub, I think we went out of the Newbury Tothill car park and took the Thatcham road. After a short distance and olde worlde white pub, big car park, was on our right.
Amesbury and Tiverton I used as late night stops and didn't eat there.
