Yes it's normal for travel tickets just to have the initial, even though you may have more than one. As long as this initial is the same as your passport then you'll be fine.

I'd just like to use this thread, if I may, to give a big thankyou to Durham Passport Office

After Fridays mini-monsoons there was a bit of deluge and work and my office was completely flooded out, I had my passport in a desk and it was ruined! I'm due to go to Barcelona on Tuesday so I rang the passport office and spoke to a lovely man called Adam who although there were no free appointments at Durham today, fitted me in and personally saw my passport replacement take place in less than 2 hours!

I've sent an email to his bosses and hopefully he'll be given somesort of acknowledgement as he couldn't accept anything from me!

Thankyou Durham and thankyou Adam!

You are fine with your children on your passport until your passport needs renewing or they turn 16years old then they have to have there own.

:D Hi, so sorry if this question has been asked!

Just renewed sons passport (sent and received all in one week! ). Son is 13, the passport is valid from july 2007 - feb 2013 (5 yrs and 9 months - as we renewed it 9 months earlier). My question is what happens when he turns 16? (As he will only be able to use this passport for about 2 half years), will they give him an adults passport with the remainding 3 years on?, or will this one be of no use? will I have to get an adults passport?, or will he be able to use this passport until it expires?

I have tried looking up this information, but I cannot find a thing!

Thanks in advance

Hi BBB ... a child passport is valid for 5 years, irrespective of whether the 16th birthday occurs during that 5 year validity period. Your son requires to take no action when he turns 16, as his passport will not need replacement until it reaches its expiry date. A 15 year old applying for a new child passport could effectively travel on it until they were 20.

:D Hi David - thanks very much for that - You learn something new every day - Got told from another source (Not anyone on HT), that when they turn 16 they have to apply for an adults passport, and the three years gets put onto that passport  !!

Thanks again, BBB

Hi BBB
Just to confirm David's reply.
My niece who is coming to Cyprus with me is turning 18 just before we go over and she still has just under 2 years left on her child passport. I was worried about her being 18 and still having a childs passport, so I wrote an e-mail to the passport office who confirmed that her passport is fully valid until the renewal date.
I must also say the passport office were very quick in answering my question.

My son has used his child passport on 3 holidays since his 16th birthday with no problems :) It expires when he is 19.
Not sure if he'll have do this new interview thing when he gets his first adult passport, having already held his own child passport (he's never been on mine, always had his own) - does anyone know any more about this?

At this stage, interviews are for those who have never held a passport in their own name. Those who held a child passport are excluded, but those who were only ever named on parent's passport are included.

Thanks David - I looked on the passport website a while ago but it wasn't really clear about people who have held their own child passport, so I wasn't sure. Both my kids' passports expire in April 2009, son will be 19 then and daughter will be just 16, so they'll both have to get adult passports - it will be so much easier to do this quickly if they don't have to faff around with interviews. Let's hope they don't change the rules again before then!

Ladyjan,

1stly let me say that the counter service at Durham and all other regional offices is very good.

Your worry about the postal strike(s) is unfounded as passports are not delivered by the Royal Mail, so the strikes should not affect the delivery of the passport at all.

With regards to switching flights, whilst I don't believe it will be necessary, it might be wise to speak to the travel agents etc to have a back up plan.

I have just started to get our suitcases, passports etc out for our upcoming holiday to Ibiza on 13 August, and I have just noticed that my daughters passport is due to expire in Nov 2007  . I know that you are ment to have at least 6 months left on your passport.

Someone has told me that it should be ok as long as her passport is valid for the duration of our stay. Does anyone know if this is true?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Your daughter doesn't need to have six months left on her passport, it only needs to be valid for the period of her stay BUT if you are travelling with a tour operator they may have made their own rules (which you have to follow) and may deny boarding.
