Hi
I'm considering a holiday in Britain next year, possibly in the Peak District during the school summer holidays. I'd like to book 2 cottages for our party and have been looking at properties and prices. Does anyone have any recommedations as to reliable companies/good areas of the Peak District? We like a fairly quiet holiday but also like to visit towns/villages for meals, sight seeing etc. One of the party is a 6 year old boy, so any ideas for things to do would be appreciated!
Thanks

Hello Musicmaker, sorry, can`t recommend hotels as we`v e only ever been for days, but Matlock Bath would make a good base for your trip. There`s a small aquarium there, a bus and tram museum, another dedicated to the mining of the area, and there`s also the cable car ride up to The Heights of Abraham, spectacular views, and old mines that you can go into. And the countryside around there is beautiful.
Not too far away is Bakewell, home of the famous tart (CULINARY) and of course the major historic houses of Chatsworth, Haddon Hall and Hardwick Hall.
With careful preparation, you could even visit .......... Alton Towers for a good day out!!
A lovely area of England awaiting rediscovery.

Hi there
I live in Chesterfield so can't comment on holiday companies --sorry
BUT visiting the area can give you loads to do
so are you active or a walker or do you just prefer history?????
We've got the lot and I really do mean it
websites to help are
http://www.visitpeakdistrict.com/
http://www.peakdistrictonline.co.uk/content.php
http://www.cressbrook.co.uk/
PM me if you want something specific and I can point you in the right direction
MYspecialities are fishing, photography, and caravanning. I used to go mountain biking but had to pack up but still got special MB maps
Thanks for all your replies - the Peak District sounds fantastic! We love history - not too much walking, one of the party has had a hip replacement - but lovely views and quiet villages sound exactly what we are looking for. I'm going to check out cottages at peakcottages.com and hopefully I'll be able to book quite soon.
Thanks again

Well you've got
Chatsworth -- House
Chesterfield -- Crooked Spire and lots more
Bolsover -- Castle
Buxton need I say more Spa town
Matlock and Matlock Bath
Cromford -- Arkwright Mills --the canal --High Peak Railway
Hartington where Stilton Cheese was first made
Eyam -- of Plague fame
then loads of little villages like Ashover where you can find a tea rom and enjoy the coutnryside
you make an excellent case for holidaying in the area! Never mind foreign travel, I've had enough of airport delays. I will definitely book for next July/August. I would love the historic houses and gardens (I'm a keen gardener) and the mines/Peak railway and railway museums sound great for the 6 year old. Something for everyone there... Buxton and Bakewell look lovely as well. Waiting until next summer is going to be difficult!
Many thanks

we had a beautiful log cabin and it really was a lovely break, about 20 minutes from matlock
I've booked 2 cottages in the Peak District for next August! We're staying in a village called Monyash, a bit further north than we'd planned (the cottages near Ashbourne weren't available) but it looks lovely. Does anyone know how long it might take to drive to the Heights of Abraham from Monyash? Apparently the village is near Bakewell. Is the Heights of Abraham worth a visit?
Thanks

I think so, but we go up every time, just for the cable car ride and the view! There are a couple of old mines to go into, and a cafe up there, and like I said, the views are great.

Sounds daft this but I've never been up there and I live just 8-9 miles away
Monyash a 4-5 miles outside Bakewell on the B5055 a lot better than Ashbourne which is outside the Peak District at least you are well inside the wild and woolly vest of the Peak there
PM me nearer the time and I will see what I can do to find out whats happening in and around to enjoy - that's if I'm still in England
I've just got back from Venice , off to Pisa and Lanzarote soon and just can't make up our minds for New Year ????? decisions decisions
I can vouch for hayfield as well.
What's Hayfield?
there are loads to do and see, there is wilboarclough,,, the roaches, winking witch, tittesworth resevoir,,,, ,, eyam is briliant for historians and the black death,,,,,bakewell has a river running thru it and the fish are MASSIVEEEEEE
pooles cavern in buxton,,,,
ooooo i could go on
It`s certainly a bikers haven at Bank holiday weekends, they don`t leave an inch of space, there are so many of them!
It's lovely round Monyash. There's a beautiful walk along nearby Lathkill Dale, in spring parts of it are carpeted with cowslips and wild orchids. Further along the Dale the path runs along side a clear trout filled river. Plenty of fairly gentle walking, for the more energetic, or lovely places to picnic and relax.

Try ANY week-end Matlock Bath is a place where anuone who has a motor bike can go and not get demeaned just 'costhey ride a bike
but at Bank Holidays they do rather take over the place
Mid-week however it is a place of peaceful serenity
It doesn't sound like any of us (6 of us going) will be bored! It also sounds like we made the right choice going to Monyash. Now, if I could just get Peak Cottages to send me the confirmation of the booking... A week after booking and there is still no sign of it. I don't want anything to go wrong now, so another phone call to them tomorrow might be in order.
Great responses - what a wonderful site Holidaytruths is!!
Best wishes
