Hi Briar
In case you (or anyone else) haven't seen it, you can read all about the Pet Travel Scheme (PETS) HERE.

We have recently had our dog issued with a pet passport ready for our move to Tenerife. There is a space for you to put your pets photo if you want. Our dog was not chipped so this had to be done as part of the process. It cost us £194 in total that was for the chip and the first rabies jab on the first visit, two weeks later another rabies jab, then two weeks later we had to take him back for a blood test (to check rabies levels). When we took him back for his blood test they took him off me and went into another room. They shaved the underside of his neck and took the blood from there, something to do with more oxygen in the blood in that area. Approx two weeks after the blood test vet phoned to say results were fine and we could collect his passport. The results can take upto a month.
One word of advise though, getting the passport is not the end of it. You can take your pet out of the country once it has it's passport but it cannot return to the UK for 6 months after you receive the blood test results. So if you are just taking it away for a couple of weeks you will have to wait a while. The date that it can return to the UK will be in the passport. Also prior to taking you pet abroad you will have to return to your vet and have it treated for fleas and worms (wether it has them or not) as this has to be entered onto the passport. Here's the best bit, the flea and worm treatment has to be done not more than 48 hrs before travelling and not less than 36hrs.
Hope this helps

I don't know how your Vet is pricing your dogs passport but when we went to ours she told us the total cost for the treatment needed. We paid the full amount on our first visit. She did not actually give us a breakdown of charges.
We had him done for our trip to Tenerife. Apparently some vets don't do the blood test prior to issuing the passport, which means should you take the animal abroad you will have to have it done prior to your return then wait for results plus the 6 months you would have to wait before it can return to the UK. Boy that's a long holiday! When we had our dog done it worked out he would not be allowed back into the UK until September 06 but unfortunately things have not gone to plan and we haven't even gone yet. I thought the timing of the flea and worm treatment seemed a bit wierd. Surely once they have been treated that's it, as long as it is done regularly and entered on the passport. Perhaps you could ask your vet and see what he/she says. Might get conflicting answers.

Just been on the DEFRA website. Got the timing wrong on the tick treatment sorry. It is not less than 24 hrs and not more than 48. It also states that this treatment must be administered by a vet every time they enter the UK. So my understanding is every time you take your dog on holiday you will have to find a vet in that country to administer the treatment prior to your return. It also states that the treatment must contain certain ingredients. Like I said in my previous post, ask your vet for clarification of this as it seems a bit much to me. In my case it would not be so bad as he would be living in Tenerife with us so would only have to have him treated prior to any visits back to the UK.

Not only that, there are also only certain airlines that will take them, and guess what, their not the cheap ones. We checked out flights and it works out almost double for us all to travel on the same flight as the dog. We have decided that when the time comes either hubby or myself (prefereably me as I would kill for four hours to myself) will travel with the dog and the other one will travel with the rest of the family on a cheaper flight.
It works out cheaper to take the dog as excess baggage than sending him airfreight. Some airfreight companies wanted between £350 and £600 to transport him to Tenerife. To take him as excess baggage it works out £20 for the paperwork and £6.60 per kilo of weight for the dog and his container. He's only a little Jack Russell so will cost us about £200. The prices the airfreight companies quoted you would think he is a St Bernard

only certain airports you can fly back too
What about us lot oop north! No airports further than Manchester, doesn't seem fair as most of the airlines frequent our local airport!
It's a case of the airport having the holding facilities for animals incase of delayed flights. If they flew from an airport that didn't and there was a long delay they would have to stay in their containers all that time.
How far oop North are you?
Rgds Jackie
15 miles from Newcastle International and 45 miles from Durham Tees. Manchester is the nearest to us but about a 2.5 to 3 hour drive depending on traffic.
It all seems a bit of a clart on to me, but if you are staying for long periods then it's miles cheaper than kennels. It cost us £150 to put our dog in kennels for two weeks in June, more than the return flight per adult
I wouldn't take my dog abroad on holiday with me to be honest. My eldest son doesn't holiday with us anymore so he looks after him.
We are looking to move to Tenerife on a permanent basis so needed to look into getting the dog there. Eldest son wants to keep him here with him but youngest son (who's dog it is) wants him in Tenerife. To be honest so do I.

Hoping to do the same as you asap
how do you go about booking the excess baggage for the pets we will be moving dog cat and parrot
thanks
Check on the DEFRA website the airport you will be travelling from and to, it will tell you what airlines take animals on that route. You can phone them and get a quote, that is what I have done. When you eventually book your flights you inform them then that you will be taking the animals and they will deal with it. The DEFRA website will also tell you the size of containers that the animals will need to be in.
Hope this helps

I wouldn't leave my dog with anyone except my son when we go away now. We have only left him once when he was about one and we convinced our eldest son to come and join us for the second week as it would probably be the last family holiday we had with him. A good friend of mine who lives around the corner offered to have him for the week that my son was with us, as we had looked into kennels and just didn't fancy it. My friend had a very old dog who has since died, but she said our dog would be company for it. When we picked our dog up on our reutrn home he was covered in fleas . We spent the next week or so bathing him everyday in flea shampoo and spraying him with flea sprays. He was not impressed. He is only three now but it is suprising how quickly they become part of the family.

LOL.

im in the process of looking into all of this, as we are considering moving to turkey next summer, but sadly turkey isnt included in the passport allowed countries so i dont know what to do, ive had her chipped anyway, im now looking into flight companies but most havent got next years prices out, t cook and thomsons have quoted me around £500 which is double passenger prices whereas kthy have said she could go as excess luggage but they cant give me a price as yet. i really dont know what to do for the best, shes been a rescue dog and is lovely natured but so nervous of anything, just hope we are doing the right thing taking her with us. ive got to decide whether to bother with a passport if its not going to help although ive been told if i take her into a dog passport country i can use it there, if we need to come back, oh decisions
ive been told by a few people although not official people its possible to go into another country and take her back to the uk this way using the passport, but im sure it cant be that easy as her passport would be stamped with the date she left turkey
thanks but ive rang them already and didnt find them too helpful once i told them it was turkey lol, they said i had to sort out any enquiries with turkish embassy lol
