We are taking our first holiday in France this year and are staying in Paizay le Tort in Charente Maritime. I have heard and read that using UK debit/credit cards can be a problem at the pumps.
We always use Nationwide debit and credit cards on vacation and wondered will we be limited to paying for everything in the sticks with cash.
I have had several channel hops for shopping and using the Nationwide Cards hasn't ever been a problem but just concerned about some of the threads I have read re petrol.
Thanks
The problem with UK cards is at unmanned petrol stations where they have the equivalent of Tesco's Pay at the Pump. We've never had a problem at manned stations and our only difficulty was once when we got low on petrol on Saturday afternoon out in the country.
Remember that getting petrol on Sundays can be difficult as many petrol stations either close or switch the pumps to automatic and will only take French credit cards. Out of normal hours can also be difficult as many petrol stations keep shop hours. Motorways should be Ok though.
As long as you have money in your account then your debit card will work (apparently most banks do not allow you to draw money abroad if you are overdrawn)
