Yes....

I was in Baga last November after spending two weeks in south Goa, a lot cleaner! When I checked into my accommodation (I'm not mentioning places) the first thing I noticed in the area was the smell. I hadn't been there for 3 years, the whole area seems to have developed massively but no sewage disposal (apart from the creek) would appear to have been developed. I walked round to Anjuna every day and was dismayed to see one of the greenest parts of the 'strip' developing into a dumping ground, very sad. Staying around this area was one of my reasons for returning to Goa, fond memories of relaxing times in Goa.

This is in an area with relatively expensive rooms/hotels/resorts. I couldn't stay round this area anymore.

I'm not moaning, this is a fact.

I forgot to mention that I saw this idiot dive (after a few ports!) into the Baga River from the wall at the Myonna (in the pitch dark) and swim up to the RGBC. I hope he lived!

Bl**dy hell. Its not that deep there, he could have done some real damage to himself on the rocks. The shells are as sharp as razors on them ...! Used to fish of the side at mayona, caught snappers too. But now its just Cat Fish. That walk through the old Hindi Village to Anjuna and then back over the hill on Flea Market day was great. Now they have built a block of flats across the path blocking it. Its been there before the Portuguese arrived when you had to get a boat across the creek before the old bridge was built. Very sad.

John is it no longer possible to walk from Baga on the hilltop to Anjuna now? We were going to do that in December to try and get rid of some of the calories!

Yes you can.

You can certainly walk around the headland to Anjuna, and from Arpora end if you follow the new tarmac road near the Saturday night market it takes you to the top of Baga hill and you can walk it's length before dropping down to the headland again. Not sure where the path over the top near the bridge is, if indeed there is one, as I have never wanted to try from that area.

We've walked it from baga creek along the path to anjuna its quite hilly in parts and abit rough under foot but its great once you actually get there you can stop of at that beach shack(cant remember the name now) and have a few drinks before you start the rest of the journey its a nice change from sitting on the beach all day..

Going back to the pollution in Baga Creek, I passed comment about that after my first visit, also warning of the dangers of eating mussels locally as the creek was a gathering place. ( I got heavily criticised by some for suggesting as much) I noticed that last November there was no sign of the mussel divers/ gatherers at all. All gone due to pollution no doubt.

Mussels have been a rarity throughout Goa for a couple of years now,

Sadly, unlike tourists, they are a species that object to being fed sewage............

Yes, I got the fright of my life. This crazy guy (Brit Ex Army) who had been necking loads of port fell out with his missus (she hated Goa ... he loved it) and dived into the creek fully clothed and swam right up to RGBC. He was leaving the next day. I can't imagine what bacteria his clothes were harboring. I presume he is still alive.

The old path over the hill to Anjuna is now blocked by Acrons development. There used to be a white cross where the path started. You can still try to walk it though but you will have to go up the side of their building until the path starts. Its near the huge Tamarind Tree before Devine Guest House. All the locals know where it is. It used to take me 20 minutes to walk to the Flea Market. You come out at Joe Bananas in South Anjuna where a well earned cold beer was waiting.
