Hoping to go to Portugal in June but looking for somewhere that's not a nightmare for someone with walking difficulties. Can get around on crutches and do the odd few stairs if not too steep but really want somewhere that isn't too hilly with safe paths/roads and a hotel/complex which is close to the beach, restaurants and bars. We're mid 40s.
A lot of the reviews we've seen on Portugal talk about women not wearing high heels because the roads are cobbled or slippery. Is this just certain areas?
Any suggestion re Portugal or elsewhere (sunny) welcome.
Aish
Hi Aish, I have mobility problems and after asking lots of questions on here and some research the only places I have found to be flat in the Algarve is Vilamoura,Quarteira and another small resort in that area which I can't remember the name of.Hope this is useful for you .
you asked about slippery/cobbled. It's common all over Portugal to find pavements in older build up areas surfaced with small smooth tiles about the size of postcards. Very nice for a garden terrace but I can imagine a bit of a nightmare for crutches if they are wet. On the plus side, they are flat pieces rather than rounded so not as bad as british style cobbles for wheelchairs.
Can't have it all I suppose :-)
Even for those with no problems...."careful there, Ted"
Monte Gordo in the Eastern Algarve is flat with a nice promenade.
