Thanks Mike, I am just going to pack it and forget all about it, just hope I dont have a guilty looking face going through customs

Bibbs, this is Mary, but I had to change my name for a certain reason. Yes you can get a full English Breakfast, but this is for the hotel owner so he can give his guests a full English too, as he cant get our bacon in Turkey.

Catch you when I return next week.

2 and a half hours left in work now, then skip to the loo (excitedly) to get my make up on, and hey presto, up, up and away.

Oh not before visiting the local restaurant for a nice Sunday Roast before we go.

Wonder if I will get a free bacon sandwich tomorrow or if he will charge me :?

I have always taken a supply of bacon etc over with me and dare I say it, never had any problems.
However, this reminds of an occassion on one of our returns from Turkey. I had travelled there with my step son (who was 26 at the time). It was his first time in Turkey and absolutely loved it. He couldn't get over how fresh and cheap the fruit etc was. He is very partial to water melon and decided to bring one home (unknown to me). It was far too big to go in the hand luggage and he thought it would be ok in his suitcase. We arrived at Dalaman airport for our return flight (the old terminal) we were the first to arrive for our flight home having booked a private transfer. I went through security first and put my case on the belt to go through the scanner. My step son followed. As his case went through the scanner I was standing to the side of the chap watching the screen showing the contents of the suitcase. All you could see was this enormous big black round blob on the screen. I knwew straight away what it was. the chap scanning the bag stopped the belt and just studied the image on his screen for a few minutes. Next thing we knew there were half a dozen armed guards surrounding us, pointing rather menacingly at the image and then us. My step son was made to open the case there and then in front of them. I was trying desperately to explain that it was only a melon and nothing sinister. He had wrapped the melon in a black bin liner. They stood back a bit, pointing guns at us and asked him to open the bag. He very carefully took the melon out to show them. The next thing all the guards were laughing very loudly. They even called some other people over to look and share in the humour. They told him to put the melon back in the case and waved us through, saying it was the first time they had seen someone smuggling a water melon out. It was quite scary at the time but looking back it was something that could possibly be seen on TV as a you have been framed clip.
I have returned a few times since then to Turkey and on our last return it was the same security chap on the scanner. He recognised me and started laughing, asking if I had any more melons in my case.
To end this tale, it is very reassuring that the security people are on the ball. Even though this was purely innocent, it could have been something far worse. I think that the security people do a grand job and obviously use their own discretion as to what they will allow through.

hi Everyone

Well just to let you know I am back home safe and had a woinderful time in Marmaris yet again.

The bacon went through no problem and it tasted lovely.

Still laughing at the water melon story, nice to see security with a smile on their face.

Unfortunately Bibbs I have to wait until September now.
To be honest, with the heatwave last week in Marmaris, I would NOT go back until September, it was unbearable the last few days.

Apart from that, the holiday was wonderful and to keep on topic, so was the bacon

hi mary,
i see what you mean, its better to be back home going to work in the rain, rather than feet up by that air con with a cold beer in your hand ?,and to stay on topic, with that sort of heat you could almost cook the bacon

Back in work tonight, first of 2 nightshifts. Lovely to feel the cool breeze on my arms today whilst shopping.

Had to price some more bacon up for September.

Hi,

We fly out tomorrow evening to marmaris, and i am just wondering if anyone has taken food (bacon) with them in their hold luggage, for our turkish friends restaurants?? If so how much did you take!

I have taken bisto and hp sauce before, but never any food, and now one of our turkish friends has asked me if i could bring some!!
I was just not sure how we stand legally??

Thanks

Hi Craigy,

I've taken bacon to Turkey - probably as much as a dozen packets. It isn't quite legal - but lots of people do it.

You should be OK taking it; if you do get stopped and searched just plead ignorance, and customs should let you through with it. :P

We've brought Chorizzo sausage back from Lanzarote, a ham shank back from Italy and lemons back from Turkey, to name a few things. Not entirely legal, but we were never stopped by Customs.

Ham shank. :D It's just given me a funny picture in my head of someone carrying it caveman style over the shoulder through the airport.

Hey SandC, how did you know my hubby was a caveman!!!
It was actually vacuum packed in the case, and was delicious.
