Leanne,
Agree with Lyn.Why have nailbars in departure lounges then, eh? :?
It sounds like they weren't a very good salon, at the least they should have offered to redo them or given you a refund. Just an excuse for poor work I think.
When I get mine done she always warns me to keep away from anything with insect repellant in.

I've always found if you massage any kind of Nut oil (e.g.Almond oil) into your acrylic nails..unless you're allergic of course....it really helps to preserve them. Plus always wear rubber gloves when your hands are in detergents etc. that also definitely helps,Oh! and use non acetone polish remover otherwise the acrylic will melt! Have never had any problems whatsoever with mine when on holidays abroad in the sun. :)
The salon I use are really helpful and will replace any damaged nails or ones that come off , in between having them filled , free of charge.
Reckon if you go to a decent enough Salon they should give us all these tips any way and if not they shouldn't be doing our nails.

fiona . good tip re the nut oil. Does that help them keep their colour and brightness. must admit im rather naughty as despite the amount of times ive been told about wearing rubber gloves I hate them, I also use a sunbed once a week in the summer as well which obviously doesnt help either.

Hi lynwestie
Olive oil is another good one for keeping them nice. Used to buy the nail oil from the Salon which was about £6 for a tiny bottle, but discovered when I ran out that the Almond or Olive oil worked just as well. Much cheaper too,as most of us have got some in the food cupboard :) Keeps them nice and shiny and better looking. Stops them from drying out, looking gluey..is that a word?..Lol.and lifting at the edges.
I know what you mean,I always hated rubber gloves before too, always felt I wasn't doing the washing up etc. properly, because I wasn't getting the feel if you know what I mean. Found the nails were getting really yellowy quickly though,so I've got a bit more used to them now and found they really do make a difference. :)

I haven't found that pre-glued falsies do any harm to my nails.

Maybe my nails are too bad to notice!!!!!

One of my false toenails just fell off inside my work sock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'll just re-glue it on though and re-cycyle it!!

when Im going on holiday I sometimes have falsie acrylic big toes put on . Look much nicer than my manky big toes and they last for ages as obviously they dont come in for the wear n tear that our nails do :D

I have had both acrylics and silk wraps they both ruin your nails. For the last few years I have used Nail Envy and it is fab.You just put it on every other day then when your nails are in good condition you just use it twice a week.Mine are really strong and grow really nicely now. :D

Thanks for the mention of Nail Envy. I've never heard of it but am certainly going to try it. I really don't want very long nails, but every time mine get to a decent length one or more of them splits very low down, which apart from ruining the look is also very painful.

Hiya.
Yes I too have been using nail envy for quite some years and have this full bottle in the house at the moment, although now I don't need to use it regularly, unless I do something stupid with my nails. it is made by OPI.
It also comes in a matt form as well as the clear shiny and I bought the matt form for my youngest lad and this is ideal for any male members of HT who want or who are required (for their job) to have nice looking nails... the lad being the vain creature that he is obviously didn't want people to know he was painting his nails with a treatment, just in case they got the wrong idea about him...he def ain't ginger beer.!

Don't expect miracles to happen overnight, perseverance is the key to success and keeping the nails and cuticles well moisturised will be an added bonus....Advocado oil or almond oil is great stuff and dead cheap, infact OPI's other product called "Avoplex" is made mainly of Advocado oil and you paint this oil around the nails and massage in the surrounding skin and cuticles....a bottle lasts for many many months

It might seem like the last thing you want to do and is the opposite of what you want to achieve, but keep your nails short for at least 6 months while the new nail grows from the nailbed and with treatment, the new nail should grow nice and strong and any brittleness, flaking and peeling will slowly be corrected.
Most people forget about their hands and nails when applying sun creams/aftersun or that the sun can be just as drying/damaging as water and believe me if there's anything that will give a womans age away..it's her hands and neck.!

My nails are quite strong, but also brittle and if I let them "dry out" or get ridiculously too long, they will split really low down the nail and that is :swear sore....Each to their own, but me personally I do not like rubber gloves because I have banged the ends of my nails when wearing them by not realising where the nails end and the end of the glove really is, and the damage can be seen in the form of a ridge ...until it grows out.
I've found that if you religiously apply a good hand cream everytime your hands have been in water making sure to pay extra attention around the nails, then I'm better off without gloves...but like I say, each to their own.
