Thanks Fiona!
That looks good, I'm going to get a copy and do some cooking , instead of reading all the time, :)

An Obedient Father by Akhil Sharma

This isn't really a recommendation, as I still don't know whether I liked or loathed the book ! all the way through it was a mixture of both. But I couldn't stop reading.
It's about corruption, and a Fathers sexual abuse of his Daughter.
There is a review and lots of comments on Amazon, see what you think.

Just received Shantaram for my holiday on Sunday. Hopefully its as good as everyone says :D

Shantaram is a great read, can't wait for the film. Another good read is Holy Cow. Try also "No full stops in India" (Mark Tully) - some interesting anecdotes of his observations of life in India that gives the reader an insight into how India really works (or doesn't, as the case may be)! Fascinating book.

lassigirl - The Enclyclopedia of Indian Cooking by Khalid Aziz is brilliant - been using it since it was printed in the 80's !! If you have a look http://www.amazon.co.uk/Encyclopedia-Indian-Cooking-Khalid-Aziz/dp/0718123824 you will see the reviews and there is a very cheap second hand one for sale.
I bought "The Ultimate Low Fat Indian Cook Book" from the Oxford Book Shop in Calangute and that is very well used. Produced in London so should be available in UK.
Madhur Jaffrey is good - sometimes a little fiddly but generally ok.

Update - there is also the Khalid Aziz one on ebay

Thanks for the cookery book tips, and I agree that any book by Mark Tully is a good read,

Here's one written by Jonathan Harley- Lost in Transmission- who just happens to be the husband of Sara Macdonald- Holy Cow- about his experiences as a foreign correspondant in India, could be interesting to read his version, of their adventures.

Has anyone read---- The Company of Women--- by Khushwant Singh,
It has been described as --- The most erotic modern novel by an Indian author --- :!:

OK you were all right, Shantaram was excellent!

Just read "An Indian in my Bed" as recommended by Chilly. Very Good! Reading now, "May you be the mother of a hundred sons" Bit deep but will carry on!

On page 145 of Shantaram and enjoying immensely. Love the description of the indian head wobble, which he learnt in the train on his way to Prabakers village - and the no 'not naked in India especially without any clothes'. Looking forward to the rest of the book.

Have Holy Cow on order for play.com - not bad £5.99 delivered.

Has anyone read Sacred Games - Vikram Chandra?
I nearly bought this today, thought id see if anyone had any comments on it first.

 Fiona..... any chance of a "top ten" review of recommended "india related" reads that we can take with us on hol to Goa. I think there must be quite a lot now judging by the number of posts on this popular subject.
Thanks.

I did struggle through Sacred Games. It took ages, and in the end i didn't feel it was worth the effort. Better than "A Suitable Boy" but not a patch on "A Fine Balance", which remains the best "big" book about India in my opinion.

Never been to India - but for reading try Amitav Ghosh. The two I enjoyed most were 'The Glass Palace' and 'The Hungry Tide'

Just read Holy Cow, thoroughly enjoyed it, especially having been to some of the places in the book. Good read!

Just reading Such a long journey by rohinton mistry and it's one of the best books I've ever read , highly recommended !

Another I read recently is, the Sari Shop by rupa bajwa, her first novel, the story is set in" modern India "and is both heartbreaking and real

Just finished "May you be the mother of a hundred sons"! They must have been worn out! Just about to start Holy Cow!
