Poor family. I searched the internet but couldnt find anything relating to it.
Im absolutly terrified of snakes and im off to paphos in sept. Just read some websites about the different kinds of snakes in Cyprus so i know what i should look out for! I think you will just have to be careful.

This sounds like the rumour-mill working overtime.

It is over 10 years since anyone died in Cyprus from a snake bite and the press would have headlined another death. Anyone bitten by a blunt-nosed viper would need an antidote which is available at all hospitals and they would have time to get to the hospital as this is not a fast acting poison as far as we understand.

This was probably a parent telling their child they can't go to the fair because.... and it has spread like wild-fire - with the details getting corrupted as it is passed from one to another.

We sincerely hope this is just a rumour - but it won't help business at the fair :?

Not a rumour it is in the local press and news, the lady who posted this is well respected and is a long time member of CL and is a business woman also..this happened, and I can say certainly not for the first time..I posted this just as a warning to be vigilant, the holiday reps have they ever told you about this? I would guess no because I do know several reps who work here and they are told not to mention this problem, it is up to the individual to believe or not, but as I said this happens here more than you would think, be careful especially with children...by the way has your local press in the UK mentioned the several deaths here due to the heat?? I doubt it floods are bigger news.

D&P Sorry but you are wrong on your comments on ten years since this happened, only last year a young Cypriot boy died of a snake attack, and sometime before that again a local lady died of a Blunt nose Viper bite..don't know where you get that info from? but is is wrong!

Again this kind of snake attack happens in all parts of the Med, but it is not in the best interest to post this kind of unfortunate news is it? as I said when was the last time a holiday rep said anything to you about this?

Jim, you have to understand our doubts, we can find no reference to it in the news.

I can understand it perhaps being kept low key here due to the floods, but I haven't seen it in the Cyprus Mail either ?

I understand that Kath but some of the above info is incorrect, even if this time it turns out to be a rumour and I doubt this as the poster is married to a Cypriot (a local Fireman) and has three children of her own, it is well to remind anyone coming here to be aware that Cyprus does have snakes that some are venomous and to be vigilant when out and about,

Snakes are in Cyprus as you know! just a warning to those that think otherwise..me I can and do live with it.

Sorry Jim but this Cyprus Mail article dated August 17 2006 quotes The island's foremost snake expert, Hans-Joerg Wiedl aka "Snake George"

http://www.cyprus-mail.com/news/main.php?id=25928&archive=1 where he states :-

16 to 20 people were bitten on the island every year, with the last fatality coming 10 years ago when a Cypriot woman was bitten by a Blunt Nosed Viper in Protaras

We think he may be the best man to tell us about snake bites and fatalities on the island !!

Unsubstantiated rumours do not help the situation and only tend to panic people. There may have been a snake bite at the fair but we are sure if there was a death then absolutely no one would be able to keep it out of the press.

Are these snakes found in holiday resorts or is it just in the country side.
I'm starting to get a bit freaked out now especially since where we are staying has gardens. :?
We are also visiting the Troodos mountains.

Hi CazzMicknTom

This really is a rumour that has got totally out of hand !!!

There ARE snakes in Cyprus just as there are snakes in all mediterannean countries. However on Cyprus only one is any danger to humans and as we pointed out earlier the last fatality from a snake bite in Cyprus was over 10 years ago.

You will find some snakes in the countryside but rarely in built-up areas.

Remember - although it may be hard to believe - snakes are MORE frightened of humans that humans are of them.

Enjoy your trip to Cyprus and the Troodos mountains -and please don't worry !!

Have a Great One
