You will find it very hard to get a good wine in Turkey, Most of it is like Water and it's very very expensive also, I paid 40 lira for a bottle of Red and it also was disgusting, White wine is marginally better than red, Expect to pay around 5 to 6 Lira for a Glass of wine.

The stuff I had last year in Olu Deniz would have stripped paint. Realised after the first couple of days that it was best to drink the local beer, soft drinks etc. Turkey is not a country noted for it's wines we are probably a bit spoilt in the UK for wines.

The only place in Turkey where I have had nice white wine was at Lykia World. Unfortunately I didn't make a note of the name on the label. However it shows it is possible to get a decent wine. Maybe someone else knows what they serve there? It was just the basic 'free' one.

I like Rose wine and had a nice one in Icmeler called something like Rosetta. Some of the white wines are ok too but have heard the reds are terrible

Thanks Barb that's a tip worth remembering. If we're going to try anything then I'll make it Rose :)

I can't believe that Turkish wine is that bad. Sure it is a Muslim country but it is still has a history of wine making and is surrounded by other wine producers. It is still a secular government.
I found the cheaper wine in Croatia virtually undrinkable but pay about £10 a bottle in a restaurant and you got a bottle of heaven.

I don't drink wine myself, but my wife likes to have red wine now and then. She paid about 15 YTL for a half bottle of red which she said was nice. She can't remember the name of it though.

can't remember the prices but Doluca white is reasonable and Kavalkerie (or similar) is also reasonable.
Don't drink red so above comments are only for white/rose.
I 've also had some other drinkable wines and think that some of the first posts regarding turkish wine are a bit unfair.
To be honest I can only think of 2 or 3 occasions when I have had really bad wine and one of these was when a bottle was definately faulty because another bottle replacing it was fine.

Cankaya white wine is very acceptable - not the cheapest but we always enjoy a bottle (or two!!).. also as Del said Doluca or Villa Doluca are reasonable quaffing wines.

.............and prawn should know

agree with prawn and del 949 - the best turkish wines are doluca/ villa doluca - red and white are ok and the sparkling (called bianca) is a really dry crisp and fresh bubbly!!

doluca ok, i should know LOL

Note the high price of wine is not caused with those who sell it, This is due to the Goverments tax on it 2 years ago, My partner has tried many many wines in Turkey and has tried very very expensive ones and the cheap ones and she still says they are all the same very very poor in quality, she even tried some Home made wine that a restauraunt owner gave her free of charge she still said it was very poor quality, I have even tried it and it was that bad to me I spat it out, We took over a 3 litre box of wine and shared it with our Turkish friends who really enjoyed it, So much so that every time we return we have to take 3x3 litre booxes to satisfy our Turkish friends and remember we go to Turkey 4 times per season, So if that doesent tell others something about Turkish wine nothing will.

I certainly wouldn't class myself as a "connosiuer" but know what I like and don't drink it if I don't, and as I posted above I have been fairly satisfied with most Turkish wines.
To be honest I have been dissapointed with far more French wines than Turkish.
