Just read through the various postings on this forum to see why.

Never been to Egypt before - then I would seriously suggest a Nile Cruise taking in the sights and history of monuments over 3000 years old rather than taking a beach holiday!

I am biased, of course as Egypt was always my 2nd favourite destination, although now I suppose it is my 1st. Cyprus was always my 1st but now I live there perhaps my priorities should change.

The cruise is a great way to see some of the ancient history along the river and also be looked after in style along the way. You can choose to do a weeks cruise and a week in hotel or possibly combine the cruise with a week at the red sea.

Personally, Luxor, Aswan and Cairo would win hands down for me every time. There is only 1 Egypt for me and that's the part along the river route.

We have been to Hurghada and although we would go back again, it's always Luxor that draws us back to Egypt time and time again.

If you want beach then its the Red Sea. Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada are your typical large resorts. You'll find all you want there, its busy and lively.

I would personally recommend El Gouna if its a trip for two. It's simply stunning there. Very laid back, yet you'll find all you need from beautiful beaches, crystal clear waters, golf courses, yacht trips, desert safaris, etc.

Due to the nature of my job I extensively travel to Egypt and would say El Gouna is my number one spot on the Red Sea http://www.elgouna.com/

Marsa Alam is another one. If you are looking for the best scuba diving and snorkelling experience then this is the place to be.

Some people in our resort did a week at Hurghada and hated it, mainly because it was extremely dirty, full of germans and they were drunk every night. Also if you like shopping they told me there isnt much to do. This isnt my opinion but of several in my hotel and off the beach.
