We stayed in Mestre for 3 nights at the end of February this year. It was directly opposite the station that takes you into Venice - approximately 10 minutes. Didn't spend much time in Mestre at all - but it was an ideal location.

We stayed at Hotel Central, and it was good. Just around from the shops, near the main square. Across from the bus stop (1 euro to venice), and a nice self service restaurant around the corner.
I'd go back! Pity you don't get direct flights from Glasgow!

The Hotel Roma is to be recommended - 2 mins walk from the bus to Venice, and a pizzeria down the road with the best pizzas I've ever had.
This hotel is a best western, but prices are good and the cleanliness is certainly next to godliness here!
