a) No use of safety belts by driver & passengers (the penalty goes to driver): 350€ & taking your licence for 10 days. In case of a Taxi the passenger of the front seat will be charged with 700€ and the penalty goes to passenger!
b) Use of mobile-phone by driver (without bluetooth): 100€ & taking your licence for 30 days.
c) no lights turned on inside tunnels: 200€
d) driving within emergency lane: 200€
e) overspeeding by 30kms of the speed-limit at Motorways (Max.=130km/h): 350€
f) Alcohol (depending on quantity in blood): 200-1200€ & taking your licence for up to 6 months
g) non stoping at STOP sign: 700€
h) No use of Helmet by motorists: 350€ & taking your licence for 10 days
IMPORTANT: Especially for Helmets, REMEMBER!, the law has changed 3 years ago when you only had to "carry" helmet with you. Now YOU HAVE TO WEAR A HELMET. If you tell the police "I had my helmet in my elbow" you still get penalty and they take your licence.
We have just returned from Greece and as usual most of these laws appear to be completely ignored. In 1600kms we only saw a couple of police cars and apart from a few tourists the wearing of crash helmets was non existant. I'm not complaining, we go to Greece because its so laid back and for the most part driving is a real pleasure, unlike the UK

One should be particularly careful in the weeks leading up to Easter (Greek) and the Christmas/New Year period as the enforcement of the laws and on-the-spot collection of the "fines" increases dramatically at these times!

Just a quick "efcharisto" to Skyllis for all the information he's posting....those of us who've been going to Greece for years still tend to operate as though the laws haven't changed, it's good to be reminded that things DO change. Kai pali efcharisto, Skylli!
The laws may have changed but until someone informs the inhabitants its business as usual. The whole family on a scooter with the youngest child in front is still common as is all children in the back of a pick-up. Also noticed that most pick-ups have non working rear lights usually complete with broken lenses. This year saw a donkey tethered to the back of a scooter being drven through the town and another one almost unbelievably being transported standing in a pick-up tied only by a rope round its neck. All very entertaining but somewhat dangerous.

Driving round whole world is normally due to everybody's common sence, culture and insticts.
Police at the other hand is depenced on goverments policy. Some countries prefer police to educate and advise drivers, in some others they are more in hunting drivers for money collection.
It's up to us how we want to behave. I wrote this post simply for your knowledge as Greek Police belongs to Hunting and not Educating, and believe me, been Greek I ashame of this.

Thanks Skyllis, we love Greece just the way it is. Gave up on Spain 25 years ago and just hope Greece dos'nt become too 'European'
