I've seen it taking about an hour to get there from Calangute sometimes.

There is alot of traffic in that area, it took us ages to get in there around 7:00

We always go sometime between 6 and 7, beat the crowds. The only thing about going early is that the bands haven't got started, but you can get something to eat and drink and spend the night there if you like.

Normally we only spend a couple of hours and then head off to eat - by then the queues can be enormous with people trying to reach the market

Someone was asking about the Saturday night market.
What I have heard this week is the man who owns the land where the Saturday market was is now is going to run it there himself.
In this months Find All mag there is a big ad which says - Ingo's Saturday night market opening this November at a new venue - more in next months mag. Ingo we will follow you.
The rumour is that the new venue is going to be at Thivim which if you have a look on a map is 21kms from Calangute - the other side of Mapusa and takes about 35 mins in a taxi. If you go to Mumbai by train this is where the train station is.
People who have stalls at the market have not heard from either party so don't know what they are doing.

Hi think the rumour is true about Ingo's moving to thivim as the landlord at the site asked for 25lach for the season, and as for Mackie's he has very much angered the local people (whats new) by blocking and denying them access to the river through the market grounds, there have been police and officials there constantly throughout the last few weeks and some of the local panchayat members have stated they will do everything in their power to stop him opening. so watch this space.

Do you think people will travel that far to go to Ingos?

Not such a hassle for me as I visit friends in Assonora quite regularly so I will incorporate these visits with some time at Ingos.

to avoid libel problems I'm going to ask that we stick to just discussion about the market and avoid speculation about people.

Does anybody know if the market will be open this year?

Sorry Fiona but i dont know where your coming from with saying, talking about people.
Just stating hard core facts that Mackies Nite Bazzar may not open this year as the man who owns it has angered the local community by stopping their access to the river, it is common knowledge all over the north of Goa and a big meeting was held with the members of the panchayat and various other senior members of the police and local villagers.

we have had problems with discussion on this in the past. We have to watch that what is put on the forum does not endanger HT in any way. We run this on a voluntary basis and do not have funds for any possible legal battles and so can take no risks that might result in HT having to close. I'm just asking folks not to discuss individuals. :)

I think we will have to wait and see at the end of the month if Ingo is going to go to Thivim. People I have spoken to who both have a stall on the market don't really want to travel all the way to Thivim and if the guy runs the old one as it was before I think stall holders will still go there.
Thivim really is quite a way to go - especially if you are coming from South Goa - if they got their act together they could run a train from Margao to Thivim ;)

Well, you know what they're like, there's no rush, it might get sorted around March time!

A train from Margao to Thivim is a good idea but it's a bit too logical surely :rofl :rofl

Apparently the people living close by (in Thivim) are none to happy with this proposal and are opposing the plans to hold the market there. (info received today via friend in Assonora)

Like I said before - this is a wait and see situation - last year Ingo wanted his market the other side of Siolim and the locals got together and said no - maybe this is what is going to happen this year.
It is a pity as it was a really good night out but the location has to chosen carefully with good access by road as it is a very good "Tourist Attraction" for the whole of Goa and Goans. The Wednesday flea market in Anguna - imo - is dying a death so the other market site has to be located where it is easy reachable by taxi and not an hours wait in a taxi queue.
