Hi I wonder if anyone has visited Kefalonia recently ? We are going to lassi on 18th september and i've heard varying reports about the air being very smoky and the sea ash ridden !!
Naturally this is quite worrying for us though obviously far from the worry local people must be feeling. If you have had recent experience of a visit I would like to hear how you found things. It makes me feel selfish worrying about a holiday trip when local people are struggling but I like to be prepared .
Has anyone visited the silo studios in Lassi ,I would appreciate any comments
I'm sure you will be fine regarding the fires as it should have cooled down a little by then.
hi redjoe thanks for your reply. We are really looking forward to going and exploring the island. We have visited crete, rhodes and kos and have always found the greek people really friendly and each time have come home relaxed and wishing we were back. This will be the first time my husband and I have gone on our own as our teenagers are now doing their own thing! Is the island small and how long do you think you would need car hire for to explore ? thanks, Helen
Hi Helen, Yes the island is quite small and your best bet is to hire a car whilst there as local buses they are a bit hit and miss. You can also see more of the island that way. When we went was about 3 years ago in May and the resort was very quiet and roads do not seem to get busy I would imagine the middle of September would be much the same.
The island is a reasonable size and although you could do it all in one (long) day it is nice to have a car for 3. Two days to see the island and then one to pop out to a different beach etc.
The capital, Argostoli, is a pleasant walk from Lassi and Sunday evenings are always a treat as that's when all the locals come out.
It's worth going up to Fiscado the "posh bit" at the top and also down to Luxori - it's a nice drive down there and you can get the car ferry back in to Argostoli which gives great views.
It's mainly the Skala area that has been hit by the fires so you should be OK in Lassi - have a great time.
Vicky
many thanks for your reply. Its good to have a rough idea so we can hire a car for long enough but not over book. Do you know about a dolphin spotting boat trip ? I heard there is one but don't know where from and time of day etc, my husband steve is a diver and would love to see dolphins in their natural environment. thanks again, helen
Helen, just a quick one regarding the recent fires...The fires on the island where at the area of Scala & Poros which are approx. 50 km away from Lassi and Argostoli. Moreover it is apsolutely incorrect about what is being said about smoke or ashes and other things like this...When you get to the island you won't even realize that there was a fire on earlier this summer....
thanks miziros its reassuring to know and always better to hear from someone who knows rather than worry about rumour. really looking forward to our trip now.
hi I went to Lassi in august this year. It was really nice and relaxing and people were quite friendly. About the fires when we went on this discovery tour looking at the south of the island there is badly burned areas from where the fires were in scala. The scenery has been spoilt a bit by this but not badly. About the dolphins the tour we got told about was a beach bbq and you can go on a glass bottom boat. Everything about excursions are listed on a sheet by your rep and described in several tour operators in lassi. Hope you have fun!!
hi katherine88 thanks for your post, really looking forward to going now and feel reassured by your experience in August. Thanks again, helen
