We're off to this little island at the end of the month for a week. Has anyone been - if so any recommendations on where to eat, nice walks or anything else?
Thanks, Maria
went there 6 years ago (9/11) the food in the village of Spartachori was good. If george is still the taxi driver on the island he will pick you up and take you to his taverna. the food was excellent and because you go to his place the taxi was free. even if it's not it's worth a visit. two places in katomeri, Stavro's and fat georges (that's really how he is called to differentiate between all the georges) were good.
Where are you staying? If in Spartochori, you will get fit if you walk down to the main beach, 110 steps plus several z bends from top to bottom.
Meganissi is quiet, esp when you are going, when we were there we were invaded by Italians, the busiest 2 weeks of the year!!
I will tell you more when I know where you are staying.....but I hope you like it quiet and the real Greece, the people are also very friendly.
Thanks. Yes, we do like the quieter side of Greece. We're staying within walking distance of Vathi. Our accommodation also includes a hire car, though I can't imagine there is far to drive on the island, unless there is a car ferry to Lefkas for one of the days.
Went to Lefkas for 2 weeks in July. There is a car ferry that goes from Nidri where we were stopping to Meganissi and back several times a day. The ferry operates to serve the residents of Meganissi primarily and so the first ferry departs from to Nidri quite early and the last one is back from Nidri to Meganissi. Once you are in Nidri there is the Captain Aristidis car ferry which runs to Ithaka and Kefaloni. If you fancied being adventurous for a couple of days you could even book a couple of nights accommodation like we did either in Fiscardo or at either Vathi (yes same name!)or Frikes on Ithaka. We rang a small travel agent on the harbour front in Fiscardo who fixed us up with some wonderful rooms overlooking the waterfront at quite a reasonable price! Don't worry about speaking Greek either, He is from Scotland and the girl who helps run the office is English!! If you want any more info or phone numbers send me a PM and I will send you the details.
Meganissi is delightful.....very peaceful and relaxing, The busiest part of the island seemed to be the ports of Vathi and Spilia and the village of Spartachori which offers fantastic views over the islands of Skorpios and back towards Nidri. I am sure you will have wonderful time1

To the south of Spartohori is another beach, well ....actually a strip of pebbles, very narrow, overlooking the Meganissi straight, here there is a good taverna for lunchtime, we walked this from Spartohori, about 40 mins, called Aghios Yiannis.
You can hire a boat for the day on Meganissi if that takes your fancy..any other trips you will need to get the early [7.45] ferry back to Nidri. Two I can recommend are the Odyssea, which takes you to the Submarine cave, back to Meganiisi! we stayed on the boat then, and a beach BBQ followed by Skorpios island and swimming off the Skorpios beach...the other was on the MS Christina, the Forgotten Islands ...takes you to 2 islands Kastos and Kalamos and they were stunning.
The car ferry comes over from Nidri about 5 times a day, not sure what September schedules are like though.
Have a great time...oh and when you return to Preveza airport, be patient, the queues are horrendous, but once checked in the taverna down the road is pretty good!
Oh, forgot to say, when driving through Katomeiri and Spartohori, the streets are extremly narrow, barely wide enough for a car, so if you meet something coming the other way, expect to have to back up or find a drive to dive down!
Thanks folks! We actualy did a 2 centre holiday in Ithaca and Kefalonia in June, so probably won't visit there this time (though we loved both). We may just chill out on Meganissi, do some walking, eating, drinking, etc We haven't done more than a brief drive of Lefkas (from Parga) so might explore that for a day, if we feel the need to explore further.
yes, we found most of the beaches were pebble.....ideal for using the sea shoes mentioned in a different post!! There is one beach called aghios ioannis which has a tarmacked road leading to it which terminates at a small church (presumably aghios ioannis!!). Turn right and there is a delightful Taverna set in gardens overlooking the sea (Il Paradiso), turn left and there is the pebble beach which we found so peaceful and picturesque. It even had a closed down fish tavern complete with grandma sitting in black at the doorway!! Now how Greek do you want it!!!

Thanks again. I really can't wait now, it sound idyllic. I'll report back when I return and let you know how I got on.
Returned on Sunday after a lovely relaxing holiday on Meganissi. Lovely villa, beautiful weather and a pretty island to explore. Thought you might like to share my pictures:
I see you did the Sunset and Stars excursion too...we too found it really interesting and saw the INternational Space station and shooting stars.
I have to say that it looks absolutely idilic....a little bit of paradise.
I'd highly recommend the "sunset and stars" cruise from Nidri. We had to get a water taxi over from Meganissi, a group of 8 of us from the same flight shared the 50 euro fare, so it wasn't too bad. Steve, who runs the cruises is a fantastic storyteller and it was amazing to have such a clear view of the stars. It was a bargain at 36 euros each, including a hot vegetarian meal, wine or soft drinks.

We stayed on Meganissi in May this year and I have to agree it is a little bit of heaven. Stayed at Porto Elia, basic as usual in Greece but absolutely idyllic. Cannot recommend highly enough.
