I would say that Beamish is worth a visit, you should be just in time for the end of the Summer season I think
It's the last weekend of the summer season at Beamish but no events are scheduled for that weekend.

hi i live near durham. i can recomend a visit to beamish my two love it there also the metrocentre [gateshead] is good if you like shopping there is also metroland[funfair indoors] and cinema and bowling.
We went to Alnwick Castle recently - the gardens are fab and the fountains are amazing. All the children, including our 3 year old, were playing in them and getting really wet. Maybe more of a summer thing. Cafe caters for small children and we really enjoyed our day out - not too far from Durham I don't think...Hope this helps?
