Oh Dear ! here I go again but I've got to say it, a lot of the locals can afford to eat out sometimes, and Goa has a growing number of domestic tourists, many who are Hindu so they wouldn't want steak pie, or possibly to enter a restaurant, obviously just set up for the British tourist and long term'er. I don't know about the Calangute area, took one look and fled, just too built up for me! But go to Panjim and there are lots of good restaurants full of locals and a few tourists who find them hygienic enough.
There is already a thread on where the locals eat so won't repeat it here. I promise to say no more on the subject.
ps-- has anyone found a Russian restaurant ?

An add on to Lassi's post I think it is great to see the quality of restaurants frequented by locals (and a lot of the younger generation Goans) when you travel through the non tourist towns and villages. When we first visited Goa they just weren't there (or at least not as many as there are now). One of the best Indian restaurants in South Goa is Banjara in Margao and I don't think I have seen another western diner in when we have been there.

Thanks Max !,
I will let the waiter know, who told me it was the local name for a sea god
But Zeebop's is run by locals , serves local dishes , and the times I have been not many Russians there , at Christmas and holidays it is often full of local people, the rest of the time very international

It must be who you talk to.

We were told it's a russian name for a sea god or monster - or whatever.

We were also told that they keep all the tables reserved. When you arrive if they like the look of you, then you can have a table.
It was true - on the day we got there, lots of empty tables all reserved. But we got a table. 8)
Not that impressed by the food - I had been told it's fantastic.
