We'll be stopping in Agadir on our cruise in 2 weeks. :D

last time (5 yrs ago) we were told by the reps to give them £5 for a taxi (not the tiny one , a normal one) into town from the boat. Looking at other websites I wonder if this was expensive?

Can anyone advise? Also we went to a fixed price shop that was about 100m or so back from the beach and on a road that ran along straight for quite a bit and ran parallel to the water. Anyone know what shop it was? I don't fancy the souk again (bit scary), but might go to the fixed price shop then the beach. I hate the way the taxi drivers and other people hassle you though, so it's sort of putting us off going ashore.

Price of £5 for a Grand Taxi sounds a little excessive, would ask first. To centre of town would estimate about 40dirhams (£2.50)

Uniprix on Avenue Hassan II.

Can you pay with coins at all rather than dirhams? We won't have any dirhams for the first taxi as we'll just be off the boat, and won't be able to change any money. Smallest note we will have is a £5.

Suggest that you obtain some American Dollars or Euros and pay the taxi 5 of whichever you have

Can anyone advise me if there is an ATM at Agadir airport and where it is located? leave on Sunday.

Hi

We are booking our stay in Agadir on the internet and the cheapest way of doing it is to fly into Marrakech.
Can anyone please tell me what the route will be like and how long it will take if we hire a car or can you suggest a different way of travelling.
Is the sea safe for the kids i.e. undercurrents etc.

Thanks

Michelle

We're going to Morocco for the first time at Easter, staying in Marrakech, Taroudant and Imouzzer. Does anyone have any tips on what to do and what to avoid while we're there? We've been to Tunisia and the Gambia before so are prepared for any hassling that we might experience.

See the Djemaa el Fna in Marrakesh by day, it's relaxed and has tons of freshly-squeezed orange juice (delicious!) - the souks wind off the square. Then, see it by night, it's an assault on the senses, totally different. Don't miss it, but be prepared for some hassle, and hang onto your handbags/wallets. There are loads of sizzling food stalls there at night too, we had some great food there.

We also took a caleche (horse-and-carriage ride) around part of the medina walls around sunset - a good way to see things, and looks great as the sun heads down. Cost us around £10 for two of us for an hour, if I remember rightly.

Far from the madding crowds, we also visited the Majorelle Gardens, which a stunningly colourful and an unexpected patch of tranquillity if you want a breather

Hi Phoebe

Thanks for that advice - much appreciated. Did you end up spending a lot of money out there, or were things generally quite cheap?

Hi Corinne76,

We ended up spending less money than we thought. In Marrakech we ate in restaurants surrounding the Djemaa el Fna, some of which were comparatively more expensive than those not on the square. But still cheap (maybe £6 each). We also ate at the food stalls in the centre of the Square - very cheap (you can eat for not much more than £2.00) . We drank in a couple of hotel bars (one in the medina called Grand-Hotel Tazi at the intersection of Rue Bab Agnaou and Avenue el Mouahidine), as alcohol isn't widely available, or a female may not feel very comfortable in some of the places where it is available. There are a number of restaurants where we found you may get a set meal with wine, but those that we saw were top-end, and may set you back £20-£25 a head. You can get a fast Moroccan food lunch (perhaps spit-grilled meat/chicken) for a quid or so.

I guess what I'm saying is that you can go as cheap as a couple of quid, or spend a lot more in one of the luxary riad restaurants (and you may expect to have to reserve a table).

Shopping in the souk is cheap, as long as you expect to haggle hard in general. I was rather pleased with the large Moroccan lantern I filled my rucksack with for £3 "because it's Friday evening and I want to go to the pictures with my friends"!

I'm sure you'll have fun, and you can get by very cheaply if you want to do so.

That's a great help - thanks!

You're welcome. Hope you enjoy Marrakech as much as I did. Interested to see if Taroudant is good, and the High Atlas looks lovely :)

we throughly enjoyed our trip to marrakech, but i have to disagree with phoebe saying the djemma el fna is relaxed !! we found it megga hassle day and night, so much so my husband refused to go again. we also didnt like the cruelty to monkeys and snakes in the square so be prepared for all of it. im used to hassle having been to tunisia ,egypt and turkey but this was unbearable drove us crazy !!!

having said that we enjoyed our trip to the mountains ,the castle ruins were a good day out went to 2 of them , loved the majorelle gardens and the bus trip around the city and the outskirts of the city, so im sure you will have a great time

My experience is also that you tend to get less hassle in Morocco than elsewhere in the region - and it is of course even less outside the big resorts.

I haven't had any real problems with ATMs, either, though you do need to plan in advance a little and ask around. We found that right up on the edge of the Sahara and in the High Atlas they could be a little short on the ground, but otherwise never had any real problems and travelled with very little cash.

The Erg Chebbi dunes around Merzouga are incredible. If you like "back to nature", a few days in the Sahara travelling by camel and staying in nomad tents is in an incredible experience.

Cheers

Mike

Do any of the tour operators fly to Morocco from Scotland. The nearest I could find was Manchester or Gatwick which is a tad too far for my liking. Thanks in Advance.

I may be wrong, but according to this site, there aren't any (direct) flights from Scotland

I found it hassle enough there and back from Manchester, and the return leg of my journey was Marrakech>> Casablanca>>>Heathrow>>>Manchester

Thanks for that. Don't fancy doing that with 2 kids. So will have to look elsewhere.
