We were in the Tequila in July and the Thomson Rep told us that the hotel is refurbishing next year. He did not say when it would be closing though. Rooms could be done block by block but the communial areas would have to close.
Don't forget anyone staying in this resort, you really must get in a taxi $5 and go into Playa del Carmen a really nice safe bustling town. The main street is 5th Avenue, shops at the nearest end and more restaurants and bars at the far end.

we have booked to go to the riu Tequila on the 13th Feb for two weeks, myself , husband and three children twins aged 6 and toddler 20months wondered if you needed injections , I have looked on various websites and they say probably not necessary unless you are planning to go to remote areas ( which we are not). Also does anyone have any tips or pieces of advice to pass on.

Also strange question I know but kids love them, are there any waterslides nearby!!

Would greatly appreciate any information.

Hello Neilthebeaver.

When we stayed at the Tequila last summer, hardly anywhere showed the rugby but we did find a bar in Playa del Carmen down the road that was owned by a scotsman and run by an Englishman. I can't remember the name of the bar but it was recommended to us by the barman at a bar called the Tequila Barrell. The Tequila tried their best to find the game we were after (Wales v ?), as they did have satellite and they can pick up some of the games but unfortunately they failed to get the rugby game. The barman very kindly told us about this other bar.
Not sure about the footie, think you'll probably have more luck with that.

Hi all ...Has anyone heard any info regarding this hotel closing between aug & nov this year?
I am going first 2 weeks in aug so hope this will not affect my holiday. :cry
I emailed riu and they have said its not closing till the end of aug so i just hope they will not start winding things down while we're there.

Does this affect anyone else :que

I would doubt very much if a hotel of this quality would wind things down. I was there 5 days after a hurricane had hit and the way they worked to keep the high standards was unbelievable. I would say you'll have a wonderful holiday.

Thanks i was hoping someone would say that :cheers

Have you been to the Tequila or was it one of the other Riu's?

We were originally booked in to the Tequila 16 Sept for two weeks (we were there the same time last time and decided to return) several weeks ago we received a letter from Thompson's saying that they had been notified by the hotel that it would be closing from 20 August until the 28th November for refurbishment and we had been transferred to the Riu Playacar.

We are quite happy with this arrangement as before we booked we were 50/50 as to whether to return to the Tequila or to go to the Playacar instead, what finally decided us was a saving at the time of booking of around £300 by choosing the Tequila, we now have the benefit of having paid the price for the Tequila but are going to the Playacar.

It may begin to quieten down towards the end of your holiday,as there will not be so many people coming in, however the trend seemed to be (last year) that the Tequila was quieter during the day (people at the beach and out on excursions) and in the evening people from the other hotels (Playacar,Yucatan etc) seemed to congregate at the Tequila evening shows.
If you have any queries please do not hesitate to ask either here or PM me.

Glad its worked out well for you, maybe it was meant to be. :)
I just hope that everything is as it should be for us, there's 9 of us going and parents have been before so at least they will know if things aint up to scratch.
You never know we might get a bit of personal attention if we end up the only one's there :rofl
