It's not unreasonable to want to be in a hotel where there is a certain amount of people of your own nationality, particularly if you have children and you would like the opportunity for them to make friends with others that they can speak and communicate with. This seemed to be the objective of the OP.

It is also not unreasonable to expect people to have certain standards of hygiene and behaviour, when you are sharing such communal facilities as swimming pools and meal arrangements.

I feel the term 'racist' is used all too easily nowadays.

Phil I have to agree with Doe. Don't think anyone is venting their frustrations as mentioned in your post. I personally feel quite offended at your comment. Perhaps we could return to the original topic in question please.

Hi
I hope you all have a great holiday. Can't help you with resort as we love Arenal d'en Castell and I think it is too small for what you are after. We do have small children and went there the first time when the little one was 1 1/2. The beach is fantastic but when it comes to the shops, well not that many.

I have never been to Menorca and my boyfriend and myself (thirties) would like to try it for May 08. For what I have read about the Island it does seem more suitable for people with families. We do not have any family so is there maybe a resort you could recommend, nice restaurants and a few 'music' bars would be great. Or would you think menorca not the place if you have no family.

Thanks

Hi

I have been to Menorca with my family, husband and three small childern, with a friend and on my own. All three constellations work, I love the place. However, I would say that if you like a quiet holiday it will be fine if you want more party then no. There are bars that will have music on and restaurants etc. Not many nightclubs though. Early May is probably fairly quiet as that is the beginning of the season. We have been late May with the family and it seems like it starts to pick up end of May/June. I go to Arenal d'en Castell and love it there but it might be too quiet for you at least in early May. There are a few bars and restaurants but not many shops. The beach is lovely though. I am sure others will be able to say something about the bigger resorts. Arenal is small.

thanks for you reply. I have decided to go early june so that should be bit better.

Not looking for night clubs, shops again not an issue but would prefer a resort that does have a few bars rather than just restaurants to eat and drink.

Well, Arenal has a few bars and restaurants. Apart from them a lot of the entertainment tends to be hotel based. The bigger hotels will have some sort of a show on most nights. Even if you don't stay there it is of course possible to go there for drinks and to watch the show. The show can be a Tribute band, last year Aguamarina had some really good Chinese acrobats or it is the entertainment team on the hotel that does something like Grease. We go half board so I am not very familiar with the restaurants. Have been to the Irish Bar though and that can be good fun if you aren't sensitive to swearing. The resident singer/guitarist has a colourful language.

that sounds good. prefer going to a bar than a hotel bar, hotel bars can sometimes prove to be a bit expensive but maybe thats not the case in menorca. We will be going S/C.

Will have a look at some of the accomodation in Arenal.

If anyone can recommend any other resorts or not recommend ones which are more towards families.

Thanks

Hi Donjet

Can't speak for other resorts but I visited Cala'n Bosch in 2003 and Cala'n Forcat many years ago (too many to remember I'm afraid!).

I don't really remember too much about Forcat just that it was very quiet back then...I know things are much different there now..very family orientated.

My husband and I are both in our 30's and are going back to Cala'n Bosch next summer but that's because we have young children for whom it's perfect. It's a lovely resort with lots of restaurants and a few bars but I have to say I wouldn't choose it if it was just the two of us. I remember going for a meal when we were there last time and we'd got my parents to babysit as they were there with us. We actually felt so out of place because we didn't have the buggy with us that night. This was in June too so not during school holidays either.

Not too sure about other resorts but as far as I am aware much of Menorca is very popular with families. I think it all depends whether you object to having young children around you. From a personal perspective if I didn't have children I'm not sure I'd choose this as a place to holiday...think I'd go rather go to Cyprus or one of the smaller Greek Islands.

Perhaps some members who have visited without children could give you their point of view.

Hope this helps and happy hols

Thanks for your reply and to be honest the more that I have read, I think that you are probably right. will wait and see what other feedback I get and then make a decision.

I normally go to Greece every year but fancied trying Balerics for a change. Think maybe go with my first instinct and go to Palma Nova in majorca.

Thanks again.

Hi Donjet.

My other half and myself (no kids) have been to Cala en Bosch for 2 weeks at the end of June now for the last 8 years. We actually went again this month for another 2 weeks. We absolutely love the place. There are a few bars round the Lago in Cala en Bosch and up near the lighthouse at Cap D'artruix. AND there is a local bus that takes you to Ciutadella (the old capital) and from Cala en Bosch it only takes about 15 minutes. There are loads of bars in Ciutadella (and shops, although you say that doesnt bother you). Everyone is different but I hope my comments help you. By the way we are mid 40's (but very young ones), and we have also booked the flight already for the end of June next year. Let us know what you decide.

My husband and I have been to Menorca a couple of times on our own and we've always enjoyed it. It's nice because there's not loads of gangs of youngsters out and about.

We've stayed in Cala Galdana, Cala Blanca (near to Cala n Forcat) and Es Castell.

We had a hire car and toured the Island and, apart from those mentioned the other resort that seemed as though there were plenty of bars/restaurants etc was Cala n Porter.

Click Here for our resort reports for Menorca it might give you some ideas.

Just had a thought another place you may feel like looking into is Mahon itself - lovely little town.

Just a question...

As its my moms 60th we wil be celebrating, can anyone tell me if there is much to do in calan de bosch for my mom and stepdad.
They like to get out and about than rather chill by the pool or beach. I dont want to book this holiday and find out there`s nothing for them to do or see, would they be better in a different resort.....just asking the question...

Cheers

Hi donjet1,

We went to Menorca last year for the first time and stayed in the resort of Cala n Forcat which we really liked. We didn't know much about the Island and we chose it because it is quieter than the other islands in the Balearics however we would never return the first week in May again as it was too quiet then (although it did pick up the second week).

The resort of Cala n Forcat has plenty of bars and restaurants on the main road and there is also an outdoor area where they have live acts on in the evenings.

We did enjoy our stay there but would go later in the year next time!

We have stayed a few times in Calan Bosch. On our own as a couple (we actually went there for our honeymoon) and with our young daughter. We never felt "out of place" when we travelled on our own without children.

There are plenty of restaurants around the Marina and a few bars that stay open until the small hours.

Yes, Calan Bosch is a family resort with lots of families with children but there is also a lot of younger couples and older couples who enjoy themselves (in my opinion) just as much. Its not a resort where you will find nightclubs and beer fests and it can be quiet at times.

I think it depends on what you want from a holiday. If you are looking for hectic nightlife and loud bars, then I would say that nowhere in Menorca would suit. Its still a fairly "Spanish" island which is what makes it so charming and why it gets lots of repeat visitors year after year.

I can recommend a visit to the website - Menorca-The Guide (you will need to google it). You will find plenty of forums on all the resorts in Menorca and lots of people who visit year on year who can offer you advice.

I personally love Menorca but I dont want the typical "brit" holiday.

Happy hunting.

Hi
There is lots to do around cala'n bosch. The resort itself is really nice to walk around especially the marina area. You can walk around the resort and gaze at all the lovely villas and dream where to buy when you win the lottery! It's a nice walk to Son Xoriguer beach as well. If walking is not their thing there is a very regular (and reliable) bus service to Ciutadella which is great to look around. From there you can get a bus to virtually anywhere on the island including an express service to Mahon. Another great way to get about is for them to hire a car, it's a pleasure to drive in Menorca, not as scary as many other places so they can go anywhere they want and explore! Hope this helps.

Would definately agree with Cala'n bosch. Is a couple of music bars plus a live music bar if that's your thing.
We are a couple in our 30's and have been to Menorca three times but cala'n bosch is our favorite and we didn't feel out of place without a buggy!
We stayed All inclusive but as there are some lovely restaurants around the marina i would go self catering next time. One of the best apts are Casas del Lago which are quite expensive but worth it. We went for a look around they were really nice, you'll find these in Thomas Cook. Another one worth a look is the Siesta Playa apts, i've seen these in the Sunstart brochure (part of First Choice). We saw these as they are right on the beach they have a fantastic location although i don't know what they are like inside but they look great for a base in the resort.
Happy holiday hunting!
