I'll keep this as short as possible. I have just purchased a holiday in a Thomson travel agency. They agreed to price match the internet price. It was mentioned at the time that it is possible to use Sainsburys points towards the holiday, however I would have needed the vouchers and as I didn't at the time just went ahead.
On getting home I check the Sainsburys site to discover that what the shop had stated was incorrect and that they could have taken the £100 off just by using my card, which I had given them to have points added to. I went back to shop next day to query this and was informed that because they had discounted the shop price to match the internet then I was not allowed to use the Sainsbury discount as well.
My disagreement is this. Having checked I would have been able to use the Sainsbury discount if I had phone booked the holiday with Thompson. By choosing to support my local travel agent I have effectively had to pay £100 extra for the holiday. It is not possible to use the Sainsbury points online. Do they want shops to go out of business? I for one can see no reason to use them if you have to pay more. No customer as far as I can see can actually use Sainsbury points at the shops as the shop always offers a discount meaning that using their terms and conditions points cannot be redeemed. I contacted by phone both Thomson (asked me to write a letter) and Sainsburys (contacted on the advice of the Thomson CS but weren't the remotest bit interest in whichever part of India they connected me to).
I have written to CS requesting clarification of their policy. Anybody any experience of this?
Many special deals state something along the lines of not being able to use with other special offers.
I think that a letter to both Thomson and Sainsburys requesting clarification is the best approach at this time.
Once you have a written explanation it is possible that someone may be able to offer some opinion/advice/assistance.

i booked my holiday and they macthed the web. then i reasiled i could of had £50 discount of my hol with nectar. i then rang up andasked about it and they said because i had the web discount i could not have the nectar. i also wrote a letter and when customer services explained it, it made a lot of sense.
the stated to me that to redeem my nectar it was like a form of discount, and this would wipe any discount they had given me and this was in there terms and conditions. i accpet this as i had £150 off my holiday so i was going to carry on for £50.
I too was refused the discount - but they had already matched the website price (saving about £200), plus they had deducted a £100 promotional code I entered into the validation box (online). I had I think about 3,000 points which I asked if I could deduct those too (I remember feeling very cheeky at the time, considering the great price I had got the holiday for) - but hey, - you don't get anywhere without a bit of cheek! . The girl told me, as I had already got a large discounted holiday, I would not be able to use the nectar points (Which if I'm totally honest, - I expected this to be her reply). - What she did do though, was add the nectar points to my card,(which worked out at £15), for the amount I spent on my holiday (Which you would not get if you booked on line!)
Regards, Belly!
I have over 6000 nectar points! It seems great that you can get a good discount from the shop but obviously it's no good when you can get an even better one from online!
At the end of the day we are lucky to be getting more from the codes and keeping the points for something else!
i agree i got £7.50 of my argos stuff i brought the other day.
Plus if it's any help you can get a film from Blockbuster for 500 points (£2.50) instead of £3.95 cash!
At the end of the day I expect them not to move on this as their terms and conditions are clear. I can see no way in which I could ever use the nectar points with the shop as they always discount. I've sent my letter so I'll see what reply I get.
Howver all things being equal I did manage to get a week half board for 5 of us for a tad over a £1000 so I can't complain too much!
Did the shop match the on line price? ( did it work out cheaper booking in the shop - with the kids meals etc..). If this is the case then, by the sounds of it, you got a great deal!
Yes and no
I could have used the points if I had completed the online sale by phone. I would have had to do this as the online child meal price was the same as the adult online buy half in the shop.
The shop price before I asked them to match was the same as the online price. This is odd in itself as the online price included using a £100 discount voucher which the shop price did not. I know the last sentence is confusing but bear with it. The shop and online price were the same as the shop price had calculated the meals all at adult price and when I pointed this out they had to go back to price the holiday in a different way. Doing it in the different way reduced the price.
So in essence the shop price was far less than the online price even with the online £100 discount because the meal price for children was £47.50 dearer online for each child (I have 3). However if I had completed the online deal by phone and had them reduce the meal price then I would have been able to get the nectar £100 off the price.
I am now going to go away in a corner and explode.
i tried that one i rang the call centre and ask for a price, told them the one one and about my nectar and they told me the same,
i can have one discount or the other.
i tried every way.
i dont see why thomson do nectar they have ten times better discount then what nectar can do anyway.
You would not have got the discount on line, thomson do not add or deduct nectar points.(on line)
A good point to remember when booking on line is to enter the kids as adults, and see what price comes up, (and visa versa), as just recently we were going to book 2 adults and 1 child, total price £1,214. We then entered as three adults and the price was £1, 054. When I rang to query this, was told it was to do with the under occupancy supplements! So when booking now, I always try both options now!
By the sound of it you got a really good price, and it's very rare that you get the price lower in the shop, (than online), - so well done!, and have a great holiday!
Regards, belly!
hi belly bally boo just out of interest, can you actually book a child as an adult when booking a hol as i've never actually tried that??
Hi sunny girl - Yes you can (The girl at thomson verified this), I have done this on two occassions (When son was under 12 yrs of age).
bellyballyboo! i might give that a try on my next hol booking and see what the price difference is
Yes you can definitely book a child as an adult. Have booked our two children as adults with Libra for next year and saved about £350! I did ring Libra first to make sure I could.

hi rhodes2003 i can't believe i never thought of this before will be trying this soon
Another thing I've found worth getting quotes on re price is the number of rooms you can book. Our holiday this year was cheaper to book 2 rooms rather than just the one! Seems bizarre but definately worth checking out when comparing prices.
