It's a beautiful resort - quite quiet but with some nice restaurants and no fighting for a space on the beach. You can walk right along the beach to Playa Del Ingles - or a taxi is around 4 euros. There's a good shopping centre with 3 floors and plenty of places to eat and drink, some have naff singers but they're okay!! Meals were slightly cheaper than in the main resorts.
There's no clubbing here, and mostly couples or older company. We stayed at Rocas Rojas which was built on a hill and the sight to the beach was amazing.......however I wouldn't go there with kids again as it was just a wee bit too quiet. A big percentage of residents and holiday makers in San Augustin are Scandinavian or German and lots of them are actually home owners there, but this didn't bother us.......in fact it was nice not to be surrounded by lager lout Brits!!
We went into PDI every other day, but San Augustin was also a good starting point for sight seeing with a car - we hired a jeep for a few days and went up the mountains. Hope this helps you decide!

Have you thought about the resort of Maspalomas/Meloneras, there are some fab hotels/complexes there, a nice quiet resort right on the beach with plenty of cafe/bars restuarants which are on the beach and are great for people watching and watching the sun set, a little bit more up market than the other resorts, have been going to GC for many years and would'nt consider staying anywhere else. The club Hotel Riu Gran Canaria is all inclusive and the reviews on it are very good, also the Lopesan Costa Meloneras Resort Spa is another one, of course it depends on your budget. Take a look at http://www.thomson.co.uk they have some nice pics of both these hotels. Also http://www.travelrepublic.co.uk are quite reasonable.
