Afternoon all!
A new year and a new search for a holiday.
Majorca has been earmarked as a potential place to go but were not at all shure on what resort to go to. Magaluf is totally out as is any high rise resort.
Heres what were looking for: Nice beaches, Not a clubbing type of nightlife but lively with restaurents and cafe bars. Good restaurents with good vegitarian choice. Things to do and excursions to go on. We'd love some sort of authenticity as well.
We are a couple in late 20's.
From that short list can anyone recommend somewhere that might suit? I've looked at the resort reviews but they dont really help!
Regards
Lee
try alcudia its got the best beach no rowdy people good food and good night life and from there you can get excursions all over the island also in alcudia you have the old town and the new hope you get what you are looking for
I would try Puerto Pollensa in the North East of the Island, much more laid back than the South with a nice beach, Marina and lovely scenery and a short journey to the old town of Pollensa. There are nice restaurants most with vegetarian options.
Thanks for the advice guys. Having checked up on both resorts it would appearPuerto Pollensa would be more to our liking as it sounds a lot more authentic and picturesque. Am i right in thinking they are pretty close to each other? I wouldnt mind a day or so of touring.
Puerto Pollensa are only 3-4 miles apart, I would go for PP as less large hotels an nice atmosphere and a good beach.
Just to throw in another resort have you looked at Cala D'or which is similar to PP but I would say slighty bigger which means more choice of restaurants and shopping available.
I have been to both and would recommemd them both.
Let us know where you are looking at staying and maybe someone on here has stayed at the hotel and will be able to give comments (as well as looking at hotel reviews on here).
Good luck.
Jake

Have just read the above post, how funny as we have been to PP twice now it does spoil you but we wanted to try somewhere different and we've opted and booked Cala D'Or for this year, I just hope we won't be disappointed
we have looked at places in PP but the only hotel that looks good is the Aparthotel Duva with Thomson. Any specific hotel details would be very apreciated.
P.S. Ideally we want something close to the action. The girlfriend hates walking!
Have a look at the reviews for it on HT and see what you think

we was looking at doing a DIY holiday here so we can get better flight days and times but was put off by the potential cost of the taxi fare to PP from the airport. How did you get there and what price did you pay if you don't mind me asking?
We had no complaints with the service at the Pollensa Park or the cleanliness and we would definately go back but I would read up on it, I would hate for you to go on my recommendation then be disappointed.
For the transfer we used a firm called Taxi Conde and I have to say they gave a brilliant service, we used them two years running. They charged us 65 euro each way. You can just e-mail them direct and they will give you a quote. You don't pay anything until they pick you up on the day you arrive. They will also keep a check on the flights incase the times change so you don't have to worry about them not being there to collect you if you are delayed.

For excursions try "No frills excursions"

They are much better than they sound!
I have never done a private transfer, but it is bound to be quite expensive as PP is a long way from the airport...there are buses, but it would be quite a long session after a flight etc.
I would recommend Cala Dor - try the Sa Marina hotel or the Melia Cala Dor.
why not have a look at Puerto Pollensa, or Cala Bona, Porto Colom, Soller basically just keep away for the really big resorts...Majorca really does have a tailor made place for everyone. :
Thanks for the help guys! Coupled with a few hours of watching travel programs on the TV we decided on Puerto Pollensa and have a shortlist of Pollensa park and Hotel Uyal. Althought we havent decided on whether we will go package holiday or a DIY jobbie.

Another option instead of taxi from the airport which does cost around 65 EUR each way is to hire a car from the airport. If you thinking of car hire anyway it is definitely worth it - driving directions are here http://www.puertopollensa.com/Arriving.html - it's pretty quick now we have the new road.
Am afraid I haven't stayed in either of the hotels but we visit several times a year, so if you have any more questions just ask!
You've made an excellent choice in choosing Puerto Pollensa - it's a lovely resort. The Uyal & Pollensa Park are fairly close to each other location wise. we are going to PP this year for the first time. where are ATMs/banks?
There are plenty of ATMs & Banks & in particular along the Formentor road (parallel with the sea) & also on Juan XXIII the main road that leads to the Marina & also one in the Caprabo supermarket (ATM). Some do charge a small fee but only about 30c, I think. When you first see the ATM screen you can select English as the language.

P.S Puerto Pollenca is our favourite place so SSHHH dont tell too many people if you love it
I hear that eating out there can be pricey? we went to Cyprus in 2007 and that was very expensive if you wanted to eat out. does anyone have any suggestions where we could go that cater for us meat eaters and the vegetarians?
Eating out doesn't have to be pricey. A very good pizza place that would be good for both carnivores and veggies would be Little Italy on the pinewalk right by the sea. Large pizzas not expensive - 6 or 7 euros.
The Majorcan restaurants are a goodish bet to get the combination you're looking for. Somewhere like Celler La Parra on Juan XXIII (it has a barrel for a door) would be one such. Dishes like tumbet are all vegetables and delicious, and La Parra does this. Otherwise, you might want to try tapas of which there are a number of places, e.g. L'Almirant on the main promendade (bit pricier than some tapas here though). That gives you a range of options, both meat and non-meat, and you can eat as much as you want without spending a fortune. If fish is ok, then check out the bacalao (cod) in the Majorcan places. Usually always good.
