May half term..

It might be different in different parts of the UK. Where I live, the kids finish on Fri 23 May - the primary schools get two weeks holiday (going back on Mon 9th June) and the secondary schools get one week (going back on Mon 2nd June). The secondary schools finish a week earlier in July to make up for it. Of course, this plays havoc with families who have children of different ages :?

Hi Jayne

If you look at the schools section of your local council website, you should find the dates of school holidays for your region up to early 2009 :D

You'll be able to tell from the price hike!!

The May half-term always falls in the week when there is the Late Spring Bank Holiday Monday that anybody that works gets off.

The price hike usually covers both weeks.

That's great, thanks everyone.

It's so bad that tour operators can put the prices up so much during school holidays. I haven't got kids, but if I did, I'd take them out of school for a week rather than pay the extra!

I think I confused the issue. What I meant is that you get one week of school, but the travel companies seem to but their prices up about the wednesday of the week before till about the wednesday of the week after half term, hence me saying the price hike covers two weeks. So it's still difficult to get a good deal, with only missing the odd day of school.

It depends on the school area we definatley get two weeks that is when we go away every year!,This year its the 23rd May break up go back the 9th June. My kids are at Primary so they get two weeks the secondary schools in the area only get one though.
I know my sisters kids who live in central Mcr only get one week but they get another week somewhere we dont to make up for it.
The prices do creep up in the brochures for that time and any school hols but we always book a late deal for a really good price.

Chris that makes sense then if some areas have 2 weeks off thats why they put prices up for 2 weeks

bunny i live in the midlands and my youngest daughter is still in primary and only gets 1 week off wonder where we get our extra week then lol, we get 1 week of in feb half term, 2 weeks off for easter and 6 weeks for summer, im really surprised by this as i thought all areas had the same holidays although i knew some areas were a week earlier you learn something new everyday and ive had 2 kids finish school too which makes it worse i didnt know lol!!! :(

The schools/areas which get 2 weeks for May/June half-term only get 5 weeks in the summer instead of 6. Even in the areas where the primary schools get 2 weeks for May half-term, the secondary schools will still only get one week because the GCSE exams start in the first full week in June.
I work in a primary school and my daughter is at secondary school, so while I get an extra week at home in peace when she goes back to school at the beginning of June, she gets a week "festering" in bed at the end of July while I'm still working :| As I've said before, not ideal for families with kids of different ages either.

We live in Leeds and one of our children goes to High School and the other is in Primary school. They both have one week off at Spring Bank, they break up on Friday 23rd May and go back on Mon 2nd June.

Yes sometimes you can save a lot of money by travelling to a different airport that is not on school hols the same time as you, we saved 1400 one year by driving down to Gatwick from Manchester.
Worth the savings.
