If you look at the thread David's link will take you to you'll see that this probably has nothing to do with the fact that you are trying to book for a family and much more to do with the common practice of selling seats in increasing higher priced bands as the plane fills up. I can't comment directly on Virgin from experience but have had the same thing happen with other airlines. There is a good chance that there is only one or two seats left in the £490 price band - the moment you try and book for three it will take you up into the next tranche of seats being sold at the higher price. The way to check for this is to try and book one seat on it's own, then two etc and see where the price jump occurs. Booking for 6 once I found that I got the best price overall by making two separate bookings for 3 people each. We obviously got the last three seats from one band and the first three from the next price band up. Depending on when you were doing this search you could well go in again now for just one seat and find that all the seats at £490 have now gone and even one seat comes up at the higher price.
