Hi Champ

I stayed in Maleme which was very near to a resort called Platanias, which we visited four or five times whilst on that particular holiday.

From your explanation though I am a bit confused and am worried about giving the (little bit of) information I have in case it's the wrong one.

Do you know if your Platanais is the one about a kilometre or two from Maleme?

Hi Champ

Well my information is quite limited as I stayed in an All Inclusive hotel in Maleme.

Platanias as a resort ran along both sides of a very long road probably for about a kilometer in length. If you continued by bus (another 20mins ?) it would eventually take you in to Chania.

It's a tourist type resort rather than traditional village, with bars, restaurants, cafes, ice cream parlours running along both sides of the road and is geared to the Brit market. All sort of price ranges.

There was also a few traditional restaurants as well as we ate in one on a Saturday night. Plenty of tourists shops selling beachstuff, towels, jewellery, leather handbags, the odd small supermarket etc.

You didn't say if you were in an hotel or SC, but it would be a good place for a SC holiday due to the aforementioned.

Chania itself is lovely, with a Venitian style harbour, lots of narrow streets with good shopping, lots of leather shops, an undercover market. It has a more traditional Greek feel to it. There will be buses from Platanias to Chania.

Hope this helps a bit.

thank you for the info.
We are living on a hotel called Geraniotis, a 4 star hotel 500 meters outside the town center, the hotel is placed allone at this erea and therfore should be a quiet place, and a short walk into town for 500 meters is good to have :-) this is what i have seen from pictures and google earth as i can see the hotel there.

Hi,
I've known the area around Agia Marina (inc. Platanias) since the 1970's when the beaches were grassy and the developments at sea level were minimal. The original villages were back and up a bit as you will discover. I prefer Agia Marina but both are highly developed these days. At one time it was all Germans, due to the war cemetary at nearby Malame, then the Brits took over and now it's mainly Scandinavian. Few Brit tour operators cover it these days. You're in for a treat because you have the best part of Crete on your doorstep....the White Mountains, Falasarna, Chania, Paleochora, Elafonissi, the list is endless. It's much nicer now that the Brits have moved east (less vomit on the pavements!) but it's still lively with all the tavernas, bars, clubs and activities you could wish for. The Platanias beach is not the best but hop on a bus and in less than 5 minutes, at the Chania end of Agia Marina (around the Santa Marina Hotel, you'll find better ones. The best though is Falasarna (voted best in Europe a couple of years ago!).
My wife and I have a 6 year old daughter and she loves it. We've made several friends there and there's never a dull moment. There are some good restaurants back from the main road through Platanias......I could write a book about North West Crete! Enjoy it but be sure to get into the Mountains.
Have fun.

You'll find North West Crete much less British than Corfu and Rhodes especially if you get up into the White Mountains. In fact even in Platanias you won't find many Brits (or Germans) these days.

Platanes is near Rethymno and Platanias is a village just 10 km from the city of Chania ....two different places of Crete...
