What about Strasbourg or Colmar for Christmas markets and good food .......... but you'll need to book up early because they are becoming more and more popular and the hotels get block booked by groups.

To be honest I didn't even consider France, I have been told Strasbourg is a nice place to visit, but I must admit I don't know anything about Colmar, care to enlighten me?

We've had 3 city breaks between Christmas and New Year (approx 27th - 30th Dec) over the last few years, to Prague, Krakow and Budapest. All were enjoyable and had some Christmas markets and decorations and plenty to see. I think the most Christmasy were Prague and Krakow. Prague with it's Christmas markets was lovely, listening to Christmas carols in the Old Town Square while supping mulled wine was memorable. In Krakow it was the weather - we had a foot of snow while we were there. Here are some pictures from those trips:
