Okay im just wanting to be sure... basically my passport runs out next May, which feels like a long time away and I currently have it planned that I'll renew it/apply for a new one after I get back from my holiday this summer, in mid July but I thought I better check, just to be sure, that I am alright travelling with it this year. I'll be flying to Malta on June 24th and my passport runs out on 4th May 2009... so that gives me over 6 months left but under 12 months... from what im aware, usually its fine to travel abroad, or certainly in EU countries, as long as your passport has over 6 months left to run but in other places it can be that it has to be 12 months left(?)
I think it should be ok as Malta is now in the EU (right?), so I apologise if this is a dumb question lol but I want to be sure, obviously it would be pretty annoying to get to the airport in June and be told that I needed my passport to be valid for another 12 months, whereas if that is the case then I still have plenty of time now to apply for a new one before June...
Thanks in advance for replies
I am not aware of any country that requires 12 months to be left on a passport. Some do require 6months though, so you could travel anytime up to the end of October before even beginning to worry about whether your passport will be valid, you are travelling within the EU (yes Malta is included) put it out of your mind and start looking forward to your holiday..
Ah well *phew* thanks Judith; thats a relief, I figured I might as well double check to be sure I will write it in my calendar to apply for a new passport this summer then
be aware that airlines can impose stricter rules than countries, so I'd suggest checking with the airline you are flying with. I'm not sure why wouldn't you apply for a new passport now - you can renew up to 9 months in advance without losing out
No airlines/tour companies impose more than 6months. If Izzy's passport doesn't run out until May next year thats 14 months from now, what would the use of her getting a new passport now, she would lose 5months validity. As I stated in my post she doesn't need to even think about getting a new passport until after her summer holiday. The earliest date being August if she doesn't want to lose any validity.
sorry, quite right - I read the "expires next May" at the start of the post, but missed that it referred to 2009
