Rubbish

I live in Naika Vaddo Calangute and would you believe that we have a rubbish collection every two days without fail. There are also women who collect general rubbish lying around and gangs of people who collect cardboard and plastic bottles. Unfortunately there is still rubbish all over the place, I don't think that it will ever change, this is after all India with a population of over a billion people.

When the season is over and all the shacks are gone from the beaches the beach is covered with all sorts of rubbish. Attempts are made to clean it up. When the season starts again there is very little rubbish to be seen on the beach and then the cycle starts again.

Well, after my first week i was thinking i never want to come back here - for 4 reasons in particular, let alone the filthiness, which i also think is worse this year - but! i'm in palolem at the moment and it has restored my faith in goa, i'm candolimed out for various reasons and although have been to palolem many times before i feel it has the old crowd of mostly travellers back and a very relaxed atmosphere! will be coming here in future and south, north for a couple of days only.

62 Baht = £1
Beer slightly more than Goa, but more choice and better taste.
Food, some places and street food, less than a £1, most restaurants average out at a £5 a head, main course and beer.
Clothes definately cheaper in Thailand, and much better quality.
Taxis on the meter, also cheaper.
Lots more quality shopping so expect to spend as much, if not a little more than in Goa.
Steer clear of the European bars in Bangkok, if you wanna budget, can be £4+ a pint.
Shopaholics will have a field day in BK, from the real McCoy to excellent fakes, at bargain prices.

Have been to Thailand, parts of the holiday I enjoyed very much, however the beach - Hua Hin, wasnt a patch on Goa. There is also an extremely seedy side, prostitutes openly touting for business almost everwhere you turn. Totally put me off ever going back there.

Roxey don't be put off. I felt the same first time we went staying in Phuket at Patong Beach. This time I planned the trip myself and we went to Krabi, which is a completely different kettle of fish, laid back and pretty quiet where we stayed. I much prefer Thailand to Goa, no bad stomach, great shopping, meter taxi (so no rip off) and clean.

Candy, thats exactly what we think about Palolem, it just has something that the rest of Goa doesn't have. It feels like a real travellers hangout - so far removed from Can / Cal / Bag. Hoping to get down there myself at the week-end. We've decided to give Goa a wide berth next season but may return for a couple of weeks the season after as a stopoff on our way elsewhere, will definitely stay in Palolem.

MK61....Krabi....WOW!! The most beautiful place ever, have some good memories from there!!

GFF xx

If this is becoming a Goa v Thailand debate, then there is now only one winner, Thailand. As most others have stated, the infrastructure, cleanliness, value for money in hotels, scenery, nightlife make it a no brainer. There will always be a part of me that loves Goa, but if it was a straight choice between the two, I'd go for Thailand.
