I would suggest calling your travel insurance company ASAP. They may allow you to travel if you can get a Fit To Fly letter from your GP.

Hi Jo, you poor thing! Can't really offer much advice, just wanted to sympathise with you really, hope you're not in too much pain. I had my tonsils out on Weds so feeling pretty sorry for myself at the moment too :cry Contact your insurance company asap, they'll probably want confirmation that you are ok to travel, but you do need to speak to them whenever you receive medical treatment just to cover yourself. Hope you're feeling much better soon, Nic.

Not an expert, so just my thoughts on this.

Not been, but Benidorm is one of the biggest holiday resorts in Europe. Presumably so long as you are happy to travel, should you need it I would assume they have excellent medical facilities there, if your travel insurance didn't cover you, as it's part of the EU I would think you would get free treatment by showing your passport. (my little boy did when taken ill in the Algarve a number of years ago and needed hospitalising).

If you were going to a tiny Greek Isle or Egypt I might advise you to think twice, but I would of thought mainland Spain would be fine for a weekend, so long as you feel fit in yourself.

I think whatever way you decide to go with it Jo you should be covered . Give it a few more days before you make a final decision , hopefully you should feel much better in a couple of days . Will the packing still be in place when you go ??. but if you think it really is going to ruin your break and assuming you already had insurance in place before the abcess developed I believe all you would need is a letter from your doctor to say you are not fit to travel. No doubt your doctor will charge you a small fee and he will help you all he can ;) but definately double check with your insurance as at least then your mind will be clearer as to your options .

wish you better

These things are sent to try us :( I don't know yet how long packing will be in for. Suppose everyone is different. I'm not in much pain but its just in a difficult place.

Weve only paid £200 for the trip so I'm not that bothered about losing the money. I feel really awful for my husband as I know he really wants to go, but he's really sympathetic ( maybe he might take me to Dubai for a few days if we don't go ;) I could try lolol )

Its going to be more the fear factor of if I go am I going to spend all weekend worrying about it, so I'll ring my insurance and see what they say and hope that it heals quick.

We go to Turkey in 8 weeks so I really want it right for then. If there are any nurses out there with any advice I would be grateful for it.

Thanks

Hi Jo,
I'd like to second what you've been advised about contacting your insurance company just ot see what they have to say and then take it from there. If you decide to go I'm sure you'll be fine. My husband had and abscess removed from his leg and just like you had to have it packed by the district nurse for it to heal from the inside out. I'm sure that this was done every day though for a number of days. Wouldn't it need packing when you're away Jo?

Yes it may need packing once whilst away as we go early friday and come back Monday teatime. Nurse as said my husband can do it but its how I feel about it. Its not actually a deep wound but its fairly large surface area.

I'm going to see what insurance says and take it from there and if I don't feel up to it I'll not go. How long did it take for your husbands to heal. I know everyone is different but it just give me an idea, as nurses don't seem to know. Its only 1cm deep but its about 4cm in length.

I'm off for reflezology today to see if that may help, if nothing else it should lift my spirits abit. :(

I've spoke to nurse and she says I should be ok

There's your answer ;) leave it a few more days before you make any decisions.
Everyone is different and it depends on how much infection you've got, but as has been pointed out, Benidorm is well equiped with countless farmacia's with very knowledgeable people behind the counter, but the nurse will/should supply you with the necessary equipment to take with you.

If you're sensible about it and don't do anything stupid like jump in the hotel pool or get sand into it and follow the instructions/advice given by the nurse, then I think you will be fine....we used to leave packing (ribbon gauze) in place for at least 2 days before disturbing it...it may have changed now....if it needs packing you could always ask the nurse to let you have a go, under her/his supervision.

The packing is put into place to soak up any remaining pus, and stop the skin from healing over where the the incision has been made and sealing in any remaining infection.

Are you on a course of antibiotics.? I think you should see a vast improvement by next week, but it's your decision and nobody else's.
You should take the advice of the nurse, some of them have as much knowledge as some junior doctors and certainly more knowledge than someone flogging insurance.

Thanks everyone

I'm going to ring insurance tomorow to see what they have to say. I'm still sore at moment. I'm not on antibiotics as all infection been taken out its just a case of healing, but I'm having a little difficulty sitting down at minute.

My hubby can change dressing but its not going to be much fun if I can't walk far , so will see next week

Well I've rang insurange and they say I'm fully covered if I go. As I'm no longer having any treatment apart from packing and I am not taking any medication and I have been fully discharged from hospital.

Half of me wants to go but other half doesn't. Aargh its doing my head in now. :que

Delighted to hear you are covered, that's good news.

I would give it a couple more days and you should know a difference.

Lizzie I know exactly where you are coming from!

This time last week I was diagnosed with cellulitis, and had to cancel a day trip to the UK to see a friend who is very seriously ill. I was very disappointed, but it was obvious that I wasn't fit to fly.

This weekend I am due to go to the UK to visit her again, and to watch my nieces take part in their annual dance show - Mother In Law used to go every year, but she died in January so the rest of us said we'd go. I don't know yet whether I'll be able to go and I'm getting quite bothered about this. I could do all the resting etc but would need a wheelchair at Stansted to cope with the distance from the gate to immigration ............ but can I get any help from R*****r? No way.

Well I've made my mind up. I'm going to go :hols
I've had a word with nurse and she says if there was any doubt in her mind she wouldn't reccomend me to go, but she says I'll be fine so am staying positive and going as I can have it packed Thurs aftnoon so won't need it doing again till Sun morning ( hpoefully ) and we come back monday.

If I stayed here I'd bee having it dressed Fri and then Mon, so its only an extra day. Few days in the sun should be just what doc ordered as I'm really fed up.

My hubby says if things not right when we there we'll get a flight home, but hopefully not need to.
Obviously I'm not going to be going in pool or beach. What sort of clothes will i need, is it shorts and vest top weather or not??

If you do find it difficult you could always hire a mobility scooter to help you get about.

Hi Lizzy

The only time i have been to benidorm was 4 yrs ago and we flew out on the 2nd march, I didnt think i would need sun lotion as i thought march wouldnt be hot. How wrong was i :duh I got burnt on my chest and hubbys got badly burnt on his head and we were only there 4 days but as i said that was 4yrs ago so i cant really say about now. Maybe someone the the costa blanca forum would be able to help you better. Have you checked out the weather for benidorm :think

Just a thought, what is in the packing, if there's any liquid/gel/paste type stuff in it, you'll need doctors letter for security.

I would recommend that you get some sort of covering for the injured area to protect it from the sun. My other half had a cut on her leg just before we were due to go to Menorca but luckily enough it was on the mend although we did have to go to a doctor on the island to have the dressing changed and it was him who said we should cover it up even though there was a bandage arounfd the leg. I do hope you can enjoy your break and I'm sure that if you need medical help the hotel staff will be able to point you in the right direction.
