All insurance works like that. You have to pay for your treatment in the other Country and claim on your insurance policy when you get back home. That's what Insurance is for.

If you dont take out Insurance, you pay in the Country you are in and then what. :que No policy to claim it back from.

Neither the E111 or the EHIC which replaced it are valid in turkey ,any medical help will have to be payed for and then claimed back from your insurance on your return home ,seen plenty of cases in turkey where people just did not have the money and had to get it sent from relatives from home ,even been to a hotel where the guests had a whip round to help a young couple whos wee girl was injured at the poolside .Beware .

i really didnt know this!! ive been a bit nieve i thought with insurance i wouldnt have to pay and the hospital would claim from my insurance :duh thanks for enlightening me, never been one for reading the small print. i think ill be extra careful when i go in july.... might be best if i stay in my apartment for the two weeks, i wont use any electrical appliances, wont eat the local food, wont talk to stranges lock my doors and windows :) heheh

Thanks for the replys and i will read the insurance tips. I am looking forward to our hols and i will have a fantastic time as always........still i might opt for a lower heal though :)

A few years back my stepson broke his arm in spain,we had a doctor visit him,sent to hospital by taxi,kept in overnight,arm in plaster and taxi home,and it was all covered by our holiday insurance.We had to claim the money back for the taxi after we came home to which we received a cheque for.The only problem was that after having his arm in plaster for 6 weeks,after we visited our hospital to have it taken off the hospital abroad had set it wrong and it had to be broken again and reset for another 6 weeks.So our holiday insurance worked for us :sun2

Ours worked for us aswell, one year in Spain my daughter was ill and had to go to the hospital
on a daily basis for injections and then medication , didn't cost us a thing , we didn't claim the taxi fare for the trips back and forth the hospital as she was more important than a few pounds . Plus i never thought to claim for them or get receipts. But you have to read the small print to find out exactly what your covered for or if there will be any excess to pay .

The taxi fare we claimed back on was instead of an ambulance being sent the doctor ordered a taxi,to which he put in the claim.My husband stayed at the hospital for the couple of days,so therefore we didnt have to claim for taxis back and forth to palma from feuringerola.Our son was also more important than a few pounds and didnt expect the money back but it was sorted by the doctor on call that night.The price being for the taxi each way wasnt a few pounds though but £55.

Sorry i wasn't being insensitive about claiming back taxi fares, i merely meant that we never gave it a thought , as daughter was priority, as was your son . I do apologise .

That is because spain is in europe ,turkey is not and not covered by what used to be the F111and now is the EHIC. .

I had the misfortune of breaking my wrist in Hisaronu the doctor came to the hotel then went to hospital by hotel car the driver explained what the doctor had said i was xrayed seen by the doctor shown the xrays then arm plastered while this was going on my hubby was the an office getting verification of my insurance we paid £60 up front the insurance company is Insureandgo.All this
took 35 minutes car waited for us to take us back to our hotel when we arrived home the paper work
was waiting for us the bill came to £385-00p we just paid the £60.

Our insurance worked brilliantly in Tunisia, all I paid was for initial Drs visit & claimed that back in UK. insurance paid clinic direct & the air-ambulance.

You need to be really careful that you are getting cover for what YOU need. There is no such thing as the best, a policy which may be just what someone else needs may be missing something vital for you. You can usually download the full policy T&Cs from each company's site and check before you buy - and if you don't you've only got yourself to blame.

Travel insurance seems to be a different industry to car and home insurance and seems to work on the basis of not paying out. Note the name, Travel. You try and find a policy that has the words Holiday Insurance in big letters on the front cover. The reason why you won't is that one of the main things that is usually not covered is the holiday itself!

That said, all policies clearly state what the claims procedure is and how to get whatever assistance you are covered for. So there's no reason why you can't read it before you go.

I feel sorry for the poster as he bought what he thought would cover him.

Lots of posts here on HT about destinations, hotels and all the other things people want to know about the holiday of a lifetime.

But then when it comes to insurance we are all guilty at some time of looking for the cheapest we can find. Well we better have it just in case is the viewpoint.

Very few people actually bother to research it as they do to wanting to find the cheapest pint.

A little time to read the policy and a few pounds more can ensure that when things go wrong (which they do) you have not got the policy from hell.

YES YES and YES again!

I recently reserved accommodation with Travelodge, which wouldn't let me proceed unless I bought their cancellation insurance - an extra £1. Well it's useless to me because I live abroad, because one of the conditions is that you must have lived in the UK for at least 6 months in the past year.

But you can't book a room online without paying for this ridiculous insurance. I suppose it just adds a further pound to the cost of your room, and there seems to be no way to contact them to tell them what I think about this ......... GROWL!

There may be no way of complaining to Travelodge but there is a way of complaining to the Office of Fair Trading! Is this compulsory insurance shown in their adverts?
