definately abroad !!!!! you can't beat the planning, packing, buying holiday stuff and also the researching on HT !
Aw, I can't tell you how much joy I get in all that, I wouldn't get the same buzz sorting out a uk holiday.
when our daughter was tiny, all we could afford were caravan holidays, and great memories , but it always lashed it down ( apart from devon 2001 ) so, when we had our final caravan holiday in blackpool when she was 2 and it blew a hooly, I said to hubby, NO MORE ! so off to portugal we went , and now, we go abroad twice a year and love every minuite of it ! mind you, we do live in the lake district, so we are spoilt !

its just a pity that you can only sunbathe on them for about 2 days every year

Today looks as if it could turn into one of those 2 days! Couldn't see the Fife coast this morning from the station platform because of the haze out to sea that always forms after a couple of warm days and looking out of the window now it's burning off nicely. Pity I've got to work but I'll be out there at lunchtime!

Would have to be abroad over the UK for me everytime. The weather is a big factor and not just the sunshine during the day - you can't beat sitting out at a pavement cafe or bar at midnight in a pair of shorts and strappy top, back in the UK it gets cold at 7pm and you end up sitting there with a huge jumper over your nice summer clothes, covered in goosebumps but determined not to go indoors because you're "on holiday" and want to sit out.
I agree with others that it is cheaper abroad, maybe less so now the Euro is getting stronger but there are still places not in the Euro that are dead cheap (Turkey, Bulgaria, Egypt), it can also be very expensive to holiday in the UK with children. Costs a fortune to keep the kids amused here when the weather is inevitably bad but abroad give them a pool or a nice beach and they'll be contented for hours. The kids clubs are great too and are often included in the price.
The food is also what I love about going abroad, I love trying different foods it really makes me feel I'm on holiday because it's so different (shame about the resorts that are convinced all british people want a full english and sunday roast!!) Lastly the drink measures.... you get 2 or 3 times the normal amount when you order a drink over there! Can't be bad...

I used to think drink was cheap, but from my last experience in Spain:

€5 for a Jack Daniels and cola (ok, it may be a big measure, but that's £3.90 at current rates)

I can nip up the town and get a double JD and coke from my local for around £2 - £2.25

It's cheap to buy from supermarkets maybe, but not from pubs these days, not what it used to be like anyway

i live,less than a minutes walk,to the beach in llandudno,but you know what,running a pub,in the summer,we never see it.hubby's been,in the kitchen,since 9 this morning & is still in there now,that's after getting up,at 6 to clean.so for us,it is abroad every time,we just love being away & just relaxing together.if we stayed in this country,i would feel,i wasn't far enough away & wouldn't be soo relaxed.i love our time together abroad

Abroad for me every time!

We have had a few our caravan holidays when the kids where very young, money was tight, and we had a dog to consider.
I wouldn't do it now.

(Days out and nights in - we had some fab times but kids are much easier to occupy when they are younger.)

One thing i don't understand here

Why can't people relax on a UK holiday? When i go down to the caravan i'm perfectly relaxed, just the same as if i'm 2000 miles away!!!

I can relax on a UK holiday. I have been to center parks five or six times and normally go for a Monday to Friday break. We relax so much that it feels as good as when we have a week abroad. (Probably because there isn't a plane journey at either end taking two days off the holiday.)

Don't know but I went away to France with my bro and family and they were astounded that I'd bought books with me. They'd been used to two weeks in a Caravan in Wales every year and never once apparently had the time or inclination for reading. Much more emphasis on 'doing stuff' in the UK I suppose.

When i'm down at the caravan i've no internet, no 400 channel cable tv, no DAB radio, etc, etc, and i do things that i wouldn't do at home, like the mega crossword in the Daily Record on a Saturday!!

and even though i have my mobile (always good for emergencies) it's only people i know who have the number and i choose whether to answer or not

Definitely the sun but this year it's the cost.

Looked at same place and time this year as last in the Algarve and was over £200 dearer.Going to Dorset this year and hope weather is ok.

Don't worry Molly, you didn't ... and i'm glad you get some peace and quiet abroad

Sneezy, we aint going abroad cos we're doing quite a bit of work around the house, but given the fact that we usually end up in the Eurozone i'm quite glad we aint going as it would be a lot more expensive this year (i also have other selfish reasons for not bothering too much about the strong euro either!)
