Wow where to start, what a fantastic holiday. I've given Turkey a wide berth before as I'd had varying stories of being hassled and usually go to Greece. Last year we went to the Gambia and hated it and thought you couldn't possibly get more hassle than that so we gave it a go.
Booked with Cosmos, Karbel Hotel two weeks B&B. Beach 5 minutes walk down the main strip but we tendered to walk to the Lagoon and go to Seahorse private beach. Now when you get to the lagoon, if you go left you pay and that takes you to the tip, if you go right and walk you get to Sugar Beach, then Seahorse (and another few further along). We found Sugar Beach a bit pretentious (but that is personal opinion only). We then found Seahorse which was really lovely and laid back. The sunbeds cost 6ytl including umbrella and the pedalos 15ytl. There is a restaurant at the top on stilts which was really nice with lovely views. We were going to go one evening but never got around to it. On the beach is a octogan bar which was really nice and friendly. Ali behind the bar gets the mick taken out of him and he calls himself a miserable git - but he's not. We only went there four or five times and when we came to go they all came out and gave us a hug (even my boyfriend who is not used to being hugged by men). There is a bus that will take you back to your hotel if you want and pick you up - but we liked the walk.
Seahorse also have these really nice caravans with air con etc. Includes full english and I think they also pick you up from the airport.
Bars and restaurants that we tried. Sultan Pepper/Shadows Bar 'excuse me' - if you've been you will know what I am talking about. Really nice food, the curry night was good as well and good value and I had fajitas another time and the beef was so tender.
Ottoman - great lamb dishes and the best steak we tried. Again another lovely place.
Sultan Ahmet (near the front), really good tuna rolls and pides. Didn't get the chance to try anything else as there were so many places to choose from.
N-Joy - had a lovely few turkish casseroles there and they were fantastic.
We had a couple of pizzas elsewhere and all were really good.
Costs - on the main strip 5ytl for a beer, 5ytl for a glass of wine - we actually found it cheaper to get by the glass than bottle - apart from Cherry Chow where you get a litre of wine for about 20ytl (we ordered two large glasses but we got a litre!).
If you go down the side road (the one where the bus goes), then prices are much cheaper 2-3ytl for a large beer. We went there a couple of times but did enjoy the people watching on the main street and luckily weren't on too tight a budget.
We also had a Chinese at the front watching the sunset which was lovely. The set menu for two for £34 including a bottle of wine was really good.
Spirits around 5-8ytl - didn't have any of these though as we mainly had lager or wine. My other half had guiness which was 10ytl so a bit expensive but he was getting bored of lager. Personally we both preferred the Tubourg to the Efes.
We had a Turkish bath under Azda 20ytl, it was fantastic, well worth having on your first or second day.
Trips - we booked with Rose at Metrolya (opposite Cherry Chow). Really friendly and the trips were great. Boat trip £5 including lunch (not up to much so if you like your food take a sandwich also). They have a photographer on board and we did buy the disk as its nice getting pictures of both of you. It cost about £15. Dalyan river trip - lovely trip up the river, fun in the mud bath and we saw turtles, then we had a good buffet lunch and then sailed along to the beach past the rock tombs. They were amazing but by the time we got to the beach we were a bit tired. You also stop at a gold centre on the way but it's not pushy.
Jeep Safari - this is a must an absolutely fantastic day to Tlot and Saklient, and a proper mud bath and bathing in a river. It was the best day ever, as long as you don't mind being wet and dirty you'll love it. Personally I like being clean so didn't think I would enjoy it but it was fab.
My partner did the paraglide with Easy Riders, he loved it and had a fantastic time.
If you want to walk to Kayakoy (ghost village) get the bus to Hisaranou. We tried to walk from Olu and got a bit lost and had been walking for two hours). When you get there, the bar at the end 'Muzzy's' is where the bus stops. He has a pool out back which you can use so take your swim stuff, after walking around Kaya you'll need a cool off. Then go there, have a bit of lunch and a drink and wait for the bus. It was worth visiting, I just wish we hadn't spent 2 hours trying to get to it in the scorching heat.
Our favourite bit was Tequilla Bar. We were sat at Ottomans having a meal and we heard Guns & Roses so went over there. The guys do a bit of air guitar and they play a bit of rock (Stones, Dylan and then sometimes a bit heavier, including a Turkish bad manners track and Rammstein). One of the guys (who looks like Orlando Bloom) does a juggling act from time to time which is good. Great little bar and really friendly guys. Denise and his brother, Bariz (wheres a cap and really does play guitar) and then the guys behind the bar, including Tara who is Orlando's girlfriend.
No hassle really. They are not allowed to step outside the front and unfortunately whilst we were there the councillors caught some of them and shut 22 down for 3 nights (although they stagger this at 5 at a time). I think it was the night Turkey won and we were all out on the main strip dancing around so we felt it was a little harsh. When you walk past they talk to you and offer you a card with a discount, take it, say hello, shake their hand and if you don't want to eat there just say you are going somewhere else tonight. It's not a problem and if you say 'I'm going to N Joy tonight' there's no problem.
Overall I think it was the best holiday I've been on. I've been to Mexico, Florida, Kos, Zanta, Malta, Bulgaria, Gambia (!!!), Majorca, Spain, France and Samos and always had a good time (with the exception of the Gambia) but this really topped the lot. We are off to Portugal for 6 days in September and I don't think it is going to be the same, but I know I'll still have a good time.
We want to go back but now I have experienced Turkey, I would like to see other parts so may try somewhere else next year but go back the year after.
Anyone have any questions fire away - and if anyone wants to take me with them that's fine too!
It's nice to have confirmed what we already thought. Turkey is the best place in the world to have a holiday. We have been going back now for 8 years and sometimes we think that maybe we should try somewhere new but always change our mind as we go to book.
Thanks for a fantastic review. Have been to Turkey six times, Bodrum and Marmaris, but we are going to Olu for the first time this September.
Brilliant Sooz . so glad you enjoyed it . we always keep going back too which we would never have done years ago but nowhere else seems the same .
this is useful to others thank you
Great report. We are (hopefully) going to Olu in Sept. What was the Karbel like? We are looking at that and the Imparator. Not sure which one.
Brings it all back as we were in Olu first 2 weeks in June this year.
Although we had been to Turkey 8 times previously it was our first time to Olu Deniz and we had one of our best ever Turkish holidays (probably a close second to our first Turunc holiday)
We are hoping to return to Olu in September-overdraft allowing
How was the hotel? We stayed there last year, and going back (just paid to upgrade to a suite rather than a room) but just wondered what they had put on this year in terms of evening ents? and did you have any problems at all? Do they still use the bottom pool as a quiet one? etc
I think Oludeniz(deathsea) is very nice especially in september .
