We returned at the weekend from another fabulous holiday in Olu Deniz. We booked through Manos (Airtours) and flew with Mytravel. As we had an early check in time we booked our seats in advance. That meant we didn't have to get to the airport until 5am, giving us an extra hour's sleep. On arrival at Gatwick we went straight through with no queueing. Then when called to board we again went straight through to the airplane, didn't even have to wait in those waiting areas. Fabulous flight, being a small aircraft (held less that 150) there was no waiting ages for food, drinks ect.
We were on a gulet for the first week so we were taken straight to Fethiye. Again no waiting just us in the empty bus straight to the harbour. The gulet was a quite a small one, 10 passengers but the cabins were tiny and VERY hot. The crew were very good and we had a great bunch of people (all english) Food is one of the highlights on the gulet, its amazing how they can prepare such delicious food in such a hot tiny space. We sailed down past Kas visiting the fabulous Kekova area which is an isolated village with amazing historica ruins. They are ready for the tourists, mind you, with some nice restarants, bars and stalls buts it only accessable by sea. The highlight of our trip was when we saw some turtles. My husband was trying out the snorkle I had only just bought (our first time snorkling) when he noticed 3 turtles at the bottem of the sea. He watched them playing and when he noticed them surfacing I was ready with my camera. Actually getting him and the turtle in the same shot. We had a great week and got on with the other passengers so well that we all met up the following week for a reunion in Fethiye.
Our second week was spent at the Karbel Hotel. We were impressed with the cleanliness and food at breakfast. It was a very comfortable place to stay although we only used it for somewhere to sleep.
A few of the days we went to Sugar Beach. You can get free transport there and back but we got up early and walked there for the exercise. The sun dosn't come up over the mountain until about 9.00 It's not too far to walk and we also walked back in the heat (with a couple of stops needless to say). Its a lovely spot, very shallow warm water, ideal for small children. A lot of people were just laying in the shallow water to keep cool, (although the water was as hot as bath water). The restaurant there does some really nice food, Feta and rocket Pide and Deep fried Calamari are highly recommended.
One day we got the dolmus to Gemiler Beach. You have to change at Hisaronu. It goes through some lovely forest before getting to Kaya Koy (Ghost town) We didn't get off there, it was very rural and would probably have been quite an experience but we stayed on the bus until Gemiler Beach. We were delighted to find a lovely little beach with restaurant. Again fabulous salad and meatballs. There was a jetty where you could get a boat to Gemiler Island(historical site), or be taken out on a various water sports. The cove also had four resident ducks that paddled about the beach and swam in the sea.
As you can tell I really enjoyed my holiday and hope my report gives anyone who hasn't been yet a idea as to what to look forward to.
I am already booked up for next year!
that sounded like you had a great time, i would have loved to see the turtles too
Great report and enjoyed the read. Glad you had a fantastic time. Often think about the Gulet cruise but wonder what you do if you get landed with a bunch of plonkers !
Wilson, we've also been put of Gulets in case of plonkers! But on another post my mind's been put to rest that you meet people with the same mind set.
Well I've been on 4 gulet trips, 3 times as a single and once with my boyfriend. On every occasion everybody has got on great. A friend has been on about 10 and only once was someone obnoxious but he ended up being asked to leave the boat anyway. Certainly the exception to the rule!
For example, if you wanted to be alone for a while (say, to read a book or to sunbathe without being disturbed) would that be possible?
Or if you were tired and wanted an early night; would you be able to hear the other guests if they were still up?

So far as finding peace and quiet on a gulet - well yes you can easily do so. Some gulets are large, others not so but I will go on the smaller basic gulet. There is seating in the shade up at the back where you dine. That's always a popular place for people to go during the day to sit in the shade, read a bit, have a snooze. Sunbathing the mattresses are quite close together up at the front but not intrusive. You may have mattresses on the higher up level (roof if you like) as well so that there is plenty of space for everyone. If it's very hot the crew might have the awning down at the front so that people can lounge around in the shade both back and front and if someone wants the sun they can hop up to the roof.
The sort of holiday it is pretty much lends itself to passengers who like quiet, lazy days and a bit more of a laugh, drink, dance in the evenings.
That's been my experience anyway.
