When we'd finished packing I weighed the cases, OMG! 24 and 25 kg! I quickly ran into town, bought two wheeled holdalls, and packed all the gear into those. The empty weight of my cases was 4.5kg, the empty weifgt of the holdalls was 1.3kg! A little bit of adjustment, and we were away. We DID buy some luggage straps for identification and to keep things in place, they were brilliant! A handle at each end, fold down to nothing, and if you pack properly, very little creasing.
Definetly easier, I did notice, however, that people were using smaller cases this year, probably due to the fact of the TO's being s**t hot about luggage weights.

Hu Cricketwatcher - where did you get the holdalls from and were they wheeled? Jennyx

Yes, wheeled at one end, I got them from the shop BAGS etc.

I paid £15 each, they were supposedly half price.

Jenny dear, just remember you've now converted to BA, like me, so it isn't such a problem. Incidentally I got a new 28" expanding trolley suitcase from Tesco's last year which only weighed about 3.5 kg, So far it's survived a couple of trips and at just over £11 it won't owe me anything when it gives up the ghost. I use a brightly coloured strap round the outside for easy identification and to hold it all together if the zip does break. Some years ago I travelled back from HongKong with a big bright pink nylon holdall which I'd bought in Australia for 7 dollars and that's still going strong as well, though the plastic dividers have certainly seen better days. :rofl

Hi Aslemma, I know that I'm with Ba and I have remembered their generous allowance - and I have paid the £24 each for 2 more suitcases, but --------------------- due to the fantastic sales, we have already accumulated 4 large suitcases of toys and children's clothes and 36 large boxes of Celebration chocolates -------- and there is a local shoe shop advertising good children's trainers for £3 reduced from £15 - and so it goes on. You should know this situation - you know me!!!! Jenny x :kiss

Yes Jenny, I know you only too well. There should be an extra allowance for charity cases like you and Frank (or do I mean nut cases?) :rofl

Well, as you know, I was going to get some holdalls but when I was discussing it with my hubby, he reminded
me of what happened a few years ago on our way to Portugal.

Our cases got left out on the trolley thing on the runway in the teeming down rain for quite some time.

Luckily, because we have the hard shell type cases, our stuff was fine.
But the poor people with holdalls and material type cases - their stuff was soaking! there was loads of complaints
at Faro airport round the carousel.

So with that in mind, I'll think I'll stick to the cases we've got and just be a tad harsher with the packing, because to
be honest, we do all take stuff that we neither need or use.

(Ha - you just wait for my post about excess baggage charges in September! :haha )

Well, I'm surprising myself this year. I've made my list and instead of adding things to it (as I normally do), I'm keeping crossing things off it. At this rate I'll only need one case between hubby and me (unheard of). If things stay as they are- I might pack a fair few food things (sc) which I don't normally do. However, there's a long time (7 days) for me to change my mind about what I'm taking :D

We have alot of concerns going on holiday like most ppl do
But luggage weight has never been an issue
Theres 2 adults and 2 kids in our family so thats 80 kg

our luggage usually comes to no more than 60kg

what do you lot take ... lol

We are always underweight with our luggage too for the 4 of us but we are now having to take more smaller luggage as you can no longer combine weight. We took a holdall last year and have now bought another so we will be ditching our large case as we can't fill it without it being over 20kg.

I'm glad I've read about the rain getting into the holdalls, think I shall split a big poly bag open and wrap it around the clothing once it's packed that should at least give it some extra protection should we arrive in rain ;)

Hi Scully we are flying with BMI Baby and had never come across this until we flew with them last year and as we are flying with them again this year that's why we opted to ditch the large case for a holdall and invest in some luggage scales :tup It's a little frustrating as we only usually take 1 large and one medium case for the 4 of us, now we're taking 4 lots of luggage but it will still be way within our limit.

I'm also going to try rolling my clothes this year as suggested in this thread, sounds like a great tip :)
Ah ha! Good thinking batman! Thanks Shell!

Hope it works ;)
